She goes, \u2018Um, Trump tweeted you should be fired again.\u2019 I was like, \u2018Oh.\u2019 And then I went downstairs and made bagels for the kids.\u201d Kimmel then pointed out the timing: Trump\u2019s Truth Social post had been published at 12.49 a.m. Eastern, just 11 minutes after his Wednesday episode ended on the East Coast. \u201cHe posted this at 12.49 a.m., which is nice, he watches us live. Hi, Mr President!\u201d He then joked that it was \u201calso sweet that, even in the middle of the biggest sex scandal in the history of the American presidency, he takes precious time on the toilet to post about our show. Keeps saying we have bad ratings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump also accused Kimmel of \u201ctotally biased coverage\u201d and questioned why affiliates continued to carry the programme. The outburst came despite weeks of Kimmel steadily criticising him, but the timing suggested that the latest broadcast, dominated by the Epstein files and the Saudi state dinner, had struck a nerve. Until then, it was unclear what, specifically, might have prompted Trump to lash out again; the near-immediate timestamp provided the answer. The White House escalated matters the same day. In a formal statement attacking ABC News, citing grievances dating back to Trump\u2019s first term, the president\u2019s press office declared: \u201cABC \u2018News\u2019 is not journalism. It\u2019s a Democrat spin operation masquerading as a broadcast network.\u201d<\/p>\n

The monologue that appears to have provoked Trump\u2019s 12.49 a.m. post was Kimmel\u2019s Wednesday broadcast, a show almost entirely preoccupied with two subjects the White House has been hypersensitive to: the Epstein files and Trump\u2019s state dinner with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman<\/a>. Kimmel opened with a blistering stretch on Epstein, telling viewers he had been \u201cfollowing the path of Hurricane Epstein \u2026 it is a category 5,\u201d before raising the question he said was now unavoidable: \u201cWhat did the president know? And how old were these women when he knew it?\u201d<\/p>\n

He underscored the scale of bipartisan pressure on the administration, pointing to the overwhelming 427\u20131 House vote forcing the release of additional Epstein documents. \u201cIt was such a landslide,\u201d he joked, \u201cTrump might actually be able to re-bury the Epstein files under it.\u201d He went on to mock the idea that Trump might attempt to \u201cbury\u201d the disclosures or \u201cpull a Taylor Swift, Donny\u2019s version,\u201d recutting the files to suit himself. How the feud reignited: The September suspension and the pressure campaign<\/p>\n

The confrontation between Trump and Kimmel had already been stirred back to life in September, when ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! after the host made remarks about reactions from Trump and leading conservatives to the assassination of Charlie Kirk. The decision came after reportedly significant pressure from major ABC affiliate groups, including Nexstar and Sinclair, which objected to the segment. Trump\u2019s FCC chair, Brendan Carr, also criticised Kimmel at the time. Trump quickly claimed victory, saying: \u201cJimmy Kimmel was fired because he had bad ratings \u2026 He was fired for lack of talent.\u201d The programme returned to air a week later on 22 September following widespread criticism of the suspension, and Kimmel\u2019s comeback episode drew a ratings increase.<\/p>\n

Turning directly to camera, he reminded viewers that this was not Trump\u2019s first attempt: \u201cYou\u2019ve done this before. You tried to get me fired in September. It didn\u2019t work.\u201d He went on to describe the pattern of demands as \u201cdisturbing\u201d. Then, addressing Trump personally: \u201cMr President, I admire your tenacity. If you\u2019re watching tonight, which I presume you are, how about this? I\u2019ll go when you go. We\u2019ll be a team.
