held for two Dundalk crash victims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are \u201cno words\u201d to express the sorrow felt by families, friends, and communities after five young people were killed in a road crash in Co Louth last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds gathered in a rural village in Co Meath and a town in Co Louth on Friday for the funerals of two young men who died in the crash near Dundalk a week ago.<\/p>\n<p>Mourners were told that there is \u201cincomprehension\u201d at the death of Alan McCluskey, from Co Meath, who was a \u201ccaring\u201d friend and hard worker, and \u201cno words\u201d to describe the sorrow at the loss of Dylan Commins, from Co Louth, who was said to have had an \u201cunstoppable determination\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>They were part of a group of young people travelling in a Volkswagen Golf for a night out when the car crashed on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"427\" width=\"640\" loading=\"lazy\" his girlfriend Chloe McGee, 23, from Carrickmacross in Co Monaghan, and their friends Dylan Commins, 23, from Ardee in Co Louth, Shay Duffy, 21, from Carrickmacross in Co Monaghan, and Chloe Hipson, 21, from Bellshill, Lanarkshire, Scotland, were killed in the crash.<\/p>\n<p>President Catherine Connolly was among the mourners who attended both funerals on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Bishop Michael Router said their deaths had left communities in the area and across the country \u201cshocked and grieving\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of Mr McCluskey\u2019s funeral in Drumconrath, dozens of tractors lined the main street and crowds gathered.<\/p>\n<p>His sisters and parents placed their hands on the wooden coffin, bearing a yellow licence plate with \u201cALAN\u201d on it, as it was carried into the packed church.<\/p>\n<p>Parish priest Father Finian Connaughton told mourners that he was holding a little ceremony in the church when the \u201chorrible news\u201d of the crash was breaking last Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>He said that he baptised Mr McCluskey 22 years ago, and was there for his first communion and confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>He said the sense of disappointment and loss at his death was \u201cbeyond words\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The community had gathered in grief, anger and confusion, and \u201ccarrying a burden that at times seems unmanageable and almost overwhelming\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven as we carry out the funeral rituals, there is still an air of disbelief, incomprehension that this is happening, happening to someone who sat in these benches two Sundays ago, someone we saw driving his van down the street a very short time ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the symbols, Mr McCluskey\u2019s parents Martin and Bernie brought up photos of the family and of Alan with his girlfriend Chloe to represent \u201cthe people he loved most, who shaped him, supported him and meant everything to him\u201d, his brother-in-law Conleth McAlinden said.<\/p>\n<p>His sisters Tracey and Kellie brought up drumsticks and some of his records, including those of Luke Combs, AC\/DC and Christy Moore, representing his love for music and the soundtrack to moments of his doing a job well\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A yellow licence plate made by friends represented his love for cars and machinery; his pint glass for \u201cthe craic he had with the boys\u201d; and his favourite shirt for nights out were also brought up.<\/p>\n<p>Models of a teleporter, a John Deere and cows were brought up to represent his love of farming and the work \u201cthat brought him so much pride and joy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>An Emirates plane ticket and a camera showed his love for \u201cexperiences and seeing the world\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>His sister Sharon sang Angel and read out a reflection about her stories I heard over the past few days show a very caring side to his nature. Ever on the lookout for lads that might be mixing with the wrong company,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the house the other morning, I was asking Martin, trying to pick up bits and pieces I could talk about today. I said to Martin, \u2018You mentioned something there about looking after lads\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next thing a young fella from the end of the door says \u2018he saved me\u2019. (Credit: Liam McBurney\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlan took me aside and said \u2018Now you leave those crowd, get your self sorted out\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said \u2018What age were you then?\u2019 \u201814.\u2019 \u2018What age was Alan?\u2019 \u201814\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven at that stage, on the lookout for his friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three hours later, crowds gathered at a church in Co Louth for the funeral of 23-year-old Dylan Commins.<\/p>\n<p>The hearse arrived at the Church of the Nativity of Our Lady in Ardee along with a bright red Toyota Chaser on the back of a recovery truck.<\/p>\n<p>The hearse carrying his coffin bore a \u201cDYLAN\u201d number plate and there was a solemn tone as his family arrived at the church arm-in-arm.<\/p>\n<p>Delivering the eulogy, Mr Commins\u2019 sister Lauren said that he had brought \u201clight, laughter, and adventure into all our lives\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She said his adventurous spirit \u201ccarried him through every chapter of his life\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She said he joined Milverton Motocross Club before going on to win \u201cmany\u201d trophies, and said that cars later became \u201cthe great love of his life\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>While he was in Transition Year, Dylan and his two friends qualified for the Mini Company All-Ireland Final with dog beds they made from tyres, describing it as \u201cthe most Dylan business ever\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He later moved to Australia and \u201cworked hard in the mines\u201d before moving home after 10 months and setting up Coole Automotive, his transport and recovery business, and \u201ctalked about becoming a millionaire\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf life had given him the time, he absolutely would have made it happen,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut on 15 November, those dreams were cut heartbreakingly short, alongside the lives of his friends, and nothing will ever be the same again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cDylan lived quickly, loved deeply, and laughed loudly. He left an imprint on everyone he met \u2013 through his friendship, his mischief, his kindness, and his unstoppable determination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThough his life was far too short, it was packed with adventure, with bravery, with joy, and with the love of family and friends who adored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRest easy Dylan, the showman. (Credit: Liam McBurney\/PA).<\/p>\n<p>Among the symbols that were brought up to represent his life was a customised number plate to represent his \u201cstrong friendships\u201d and a picture of his family to \u201crepresent the memories that will continue to hold us together\u201d, Dylan\u2019s cousin Daniel Commins said.<\/p>\n<p>A picture of Dylan\u2019s lorry and his boots represented his \u201cthriving business\u201d, and one of his \u201cmany scrambling trophies\u201d represented his love for Milverton Motorcross Club.<\/p>\n<p>A Winnie the Pooh teddy, Advent calendar and a Santy letter were brought up to \u201crepresent his softer side\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Father Francesco Campiello said \u201cthere are no words\u201d were \u201cbasically the only words that were pronounced by most people after what happened last Saturday night\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsually we are full of words to comment on all the different aspects of life, but when death appears, and especially a tragic death like this, all our eloquence vanishes and we find ourselves speechless.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes when we experience great joys, we don\u2019t find the words to describe joy. This is true also for sorrow, in this moment, there are no words to express this sorrow. He is still in your present.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDenise I know you like hugs, so if on Saturday you didn\u2019t manage to hug Dylan, don\u2019t worry, you will hug him, you will give him a great hug in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bishop Michael Router said the deaths of Dylan and his friends had \u201cleft communities across this region, and indeed across the whole country, shocked and grieving\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of us can easily comprehend the scale of what has happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing that I can say or anyone else can say can take your pain away at this time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I can say this for certain: you are not alone.
