Over time, cowhide shifted from a reliable material to a symbol of artistic expression and luxury and became known more as a statement. Its earthy, natural tones allow it to pair with neutrals easily and can be a versatile asset.\n<\/p>\n However, many people question the ethics of using this print in fashion or decor, as traditional cowhide involves the use of a cow’s skin. Notably, for those who advocate for animal rights, the rising popularity of this design is a source of controversy. Cowhide, in particular, feels timeless; each one is unique yet balanced, never overly decorative.”\n<\/p>\n Despite its likely association with ranch-style or western design, cowhide has a unique effect and can blend seamlessly into a modern, neutral environment.\n<\/p>\n Dre Shapiro, principal interior designer of Dre Design, notes that it makes sense for cowhide to be considered a “new neutral” because it typically features shades of tan, brown, black, and white, which can easily work in a variety of color schemes.\n<\/p>\n “To me, a cowhide is a neutral\u2014much like denim,” Shapiro says. “It\u2019s versatile, timeless, and adaptable to almost any style.”\n<\/p>\n Shapiro also appreciates how cowhide can complement a modern, earthy, and organic aesthetic, offering warmth and texture that can be perceived as either elevated or casual, depending on the room’s intended purpose.\n<\/p>\n Leah Alexander, owner and principal interior designer at Beauty is Abundant, agrees that cowhide can work well in a space, but notes that not all styles and shades of cowhide are ideal.\n<\/p>\n “The cowhide rug, sometimes, with metallic flecks or in unnatural colors like we saw almost ten years ago\u2014and I’m sure every couple\u00a0of decades before that\u2014fell from grace fast as far as I’m concerned,” she says.\n<\/p>\n However, she does believe cowhide has its place in home decor, provided it’s used thoughtfully.\n<\/p>\n How to Work Cowhide Into Your Space <\/p>\n Designers agree that while cowhide may be a “new neutral,” there are ways to go overboard. Below are a few ways to incorporate the design into your home.\n<\/p>\n Try a Large Rug <\/p>\n The most classic and popular way to use this print is as a rug. According to Alexander, large versions are the way to go if you have the room.\n<\/p>\n “The solid cowhide rug in as large a size as possible can be timeless and elevate a space,” she says. “Even then, I’d be mindful of it making a space feel horse stable chic or too ranch-leaning for a\u00a0typical contemporary aesthetic.”\n<\/p>\n Tip<\/p>\n To avoid looking too “western” or ranch-centric, Alexander advises leaning less on the traditional “black and white” pattern, more on the cowhide itself. Solid versions in white, brown, tan, and black can keep things contemporary.<\/p>\n
