At least until she saw a one-eyed cat when searching for a wallpaper. In another instance, a search for healthy recipes turned up a puzzling image showing a slice of cooked chicken with seasonings sprinkled inside it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m000e3b6ndyj4jas2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These posts were created by generative AI, which is quickly overtaking the photo-first platform. Pinterest, like other social media platforms, has grappled with a flood of AI slop since the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/11\/tech\/openai-sora-2-meta-ai-slop-social-media\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launch of ChatGPT\u2019s Sora video generation tool<\/a> in 2024. The company has taken proactive steps to curb the content for users who don\u2019t want it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m000f3b6ntr6uh16j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the presence of generative AI has struck a chord with Pinterest\u2019s creative community, with users telling CNN that they feel unheard as the company\u2019s C-Suite goes all in on the burgeoning technology.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m000g3b6n8rp1eeb8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt makes me want to put my phone down and do something else,\u201d said Wendling, who also uses Instagram and TikTok. \u201cI would say Pinterest has the most AI-generated photos and videos out of every social media app I\u2019m using right now \u2026 I have to look over everything with a microscope now.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m000h3b6nvewi9163@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Diving headfirst into AI has been a priority for Pinterest CEO Bill Ready, who took over the company in 2022. The former Venmo and Braintree leader has rebranded Pinterest \u201cfrom a platform of window shopping\u201d to \u201can AI-powered visual-first shopping assistant\u201d in its latest earnings call this month. Its third-quarter revenue recently grew 17% year-over-year to $1 billion.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m000j3b6ndcxikuu9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Artificial intelligence, a technology that Silicon Valley is racing to adapt and monetize, is at \u201cthe heart of the Pinterest experience,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m000k3b6nfxs26oo1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What that means for Pinterest users is the stress of trying to navigate AI slop, more advertisements and less content they want to see on the platform, users told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m000l3b6n3wdif2sw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI want to see art that a human being has put time and effort into, not some gorge spit out by someone who typed a few words into an image generator,\u201d Amber Thurman, a 41-year-old Pinterest user from Illinois, said to CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m000m3b6n3tx9e1zm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over the past year, Pinterest has responded to user complaints. It <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.pinterest.com\/en-ca\/news\/pinterest-rolls-out-new-tools-to-give-users-more-control-over-gen-ai-content\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rolled out a \u201ctuner\u201d last month to adjust how much AI content users<\/a> want to see and was an <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.pinterest.com\/news\/introducing-gen-ai-labels\/?4XhTWVXdC5hGHmaOunPbYD=child_filters%3DzuhYWVa2rd3BLI82oDK0d%23news%23news%23news%23news&amp;change_language=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">early adoptor in labeling Gen AI images on its platform<\/a> earlier this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m000n3b6n446xh9b1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhile many people enjoy GenAI content on Pinterest, we know\u202fsome want to see less of it,\u201d a Pinterest spokesperson said in an email to CNN, adding: \u201cPinterest prioritizes high-quality content and what is inspirational to our users \u2013 whether it\u2019s AI-generated or not.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m000o3b6ne5aa62h1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, Pinterest users who spoke to CNN said they no longer recognize the app they signed up for and argue that the platform hasn\u2019t kept up with the daily flood of AI content. The tools to limit AI, they argue, aren\u2019t enough.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m000p3b6n6r9eo6ii@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s not a precise ability for any platform to catch 100% of what is AI-generated,\u201d Ready said in the earnings call.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m000r3b6njn35ry84@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Pinterest once served as a haven from fast-talking commentary on TikTok, life updates from former classmates on Instagram and relatives arguing over politics on Facebook.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m000s3b6nan8cyqg0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Founder Ben Silbermann <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/02\/12\/tech\/pinterest-ben-silbermann-human-code\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told CNN<\/a> in 2019 that the platform\u2019s primary goal was to inspire users. Users curated mood boards and pinned cookie recipes. And that includes finding new ways to monetize. AI.Meta, for example, will soon start using user conversations with its AI assistant to inform targeted ads.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m000u3b6npqa87hie@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For Pinterest, its future hinges on AI-powered shopping. Its algorithm pinpoints products for users based on their searches in the app.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m000v3b6nvl7ks9qf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In its latest quarter, the number of people clicking on advertiser links grew by 40% compared to the year before and has increased by more than five times in the last three years, according to earnings reports. The company is doubling down on that momentum by introducing more AI features, <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.pinterest.com\/news\/pinterest-assistant-revolutionizing-the-way-you-shop-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">such as a shopping assistant users can converse with<\/a> that acts as \u201ca best friend,\u201d the company said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m000x3b6n5gxr3neu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, some long-time users are not buying Pinterest as a shopping ad.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m000y3b6nkhjsdwf2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hailey Cole, a 31-year-old creative director from California, began using Pinterest\u2019s competitor Cosmos for design inspiration recently. She said she\u2019s never purchased anything from the platform and is worried that Pinterest\u2019s AI content may be stealing intellectual property, as she said it happened to her. Pinterest\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/help.pinterest.com\/en\/article\/copyright\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">policy<\/a> states it will take down accounts of those who repeatedly infringe on copyright or intellectual property.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m000z3b6n25n3kgaj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019ve heard the CEO say (Pinterest is a shopping app); I don\u2019t know where he came up with that\u2026 I think that\u2019s him more just envisioning or manifesting,\u201d Cole said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m00103b6nh2id336n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wendling said she worries about authenticity on Pinterest. With the sheer amount of fake content on the platform, even if she sees something she likes, she said she would go to another site and buy it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m00123b6nih92w0pf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Users will have to \u201clive with both\u201d slop and new technology as companies work to monetize the technology, Jose Marichal, a professor of political science at California Lutheran University, told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m00133b6n423hpecz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Pinterest\u2019s leaders certainly are.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m00143b6nfthv1cvm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over time, AI will follow a similar trajectory to Photoshop, Ready said. \u201cAlmost every piece of content you see will have been at a minimum edited by AI in some form or another.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m00153b6n5obzqclu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But that approach could jeopardize the authentic feel that drives users to the platform in the first place.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/gettyimages-1566510116.jpg\" alt=\"The Pinterest website in July 2023. The post linked to a different site that was riddled with ads and had an AI-generated image of a chef. The recipe itself matched almost exactly to a ChatGPT query asking for \u201cthe best chocolate chip cookie recipe ever.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m00183b6nt719t4in@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On an algorithm-driven social media site, the one thing that users can control is their own engagement with AI content. Even leaving a hate comment or sending it to a friend as a joke can signal to the algorithm that you want to see more of that content, Fiesler said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m00193b6n9mzvzbhd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Media literacy is also more important than ever as users will need to sniff out slop on their own.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m001a3b6njcfe2qcr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThese platforms are looking to gain short-term metrics, but they are degrading user experience and long-term trust,\u201d said Tony Sampson, senior academic at the University of Essex.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi9ctu3m001b3b6nry872p4f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So far, the users that spoke to CNN have been cutting down on their Pinterest usage.
