\n\tBarbara Broccoli<\/a>\u2018s Eon Productions, the former producer of the James Bond franchise, and Qatar\u2019s newly launched Film Committee are jointly producing a film adaptation of William Shakespeare\u2019s \u201cOthello,\u201d directed and starring David Oyelowo<\/a>, and also featuring Rachel Brosnahan<\/a> and Cynthia Erivo<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film, which marks Broccoli\u2019s first project since the sale of Bond rights to Amazon MGM, will be shot in the Qatari capital of Doha. It is an adaptation of the \u201cOthello\u201d play production that first ran at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2016, directed by Sam Gold.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve wanted to produce the cinematic adaptation of \u2018Othello\u2019 since we staged the production in New York in 2016,\u201d Broccoli said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\n\tOyelowo will be directing and returning as Othello, Brosnahan will be reprising the role of Desdemona and Erivo is playing Emilia.\u00a0\u201cWe thank the Film Committee for their support and look forward to shooting in Qatar in autumn 2026,\u201d Broccoli added.

Oyelowo commented: \u201cOur cinematic version of \u2018Othello\u2019 is bitingly modern and fearlessly
ambitious. To have a real shot at that, you need fearless actors.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cCynthia is not only a generational talent but a dear friend with whom I am always keen to collaborate, and Rachel was a dream to play opposite in our original stage production and has been an inspiring pillar to build around for our fresh take on this legendary tale,\u201d he added.

The \u201cOthello\u201d screenplay reimagines the classic text in a contemporary war-torn desert in the Middle
East.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen Iago is telling us of battles \u2013 as opposed to us seeing battles \u2013 you don\u2019t see the camaraderie and the friendship that gets denigrated. That\u2019s the beauty of cinema,\u201d Oyelowo said during a panel in Doha.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThat\u2019s some of what we\u2019re going to be able to do,\u201d noted Broccoli, adding that \u201cDoha will be seen on screen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOyelowo went on to describe the Qatar and Doha-set \u201cOthello\u201d project as \u201cthe most extraordinary combination of the ancient and the modern.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film\u2019s producers are Broccoli and Nicky Bentham for Eon Productions and Oyelowo for Yoruba Saxon.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Qatar Film Committee is a new official body that is part of the Media City Qatar hub tasked with driving growth of the country\u2019s entertainment industry.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe high-profile \u201cOthello\u201d project follows a flurry of pacts with Hollywood studios being unveiled at the inaugural\u00a0Doha Film Festival<\/a>\u2018s Industry Days by Hassan Al Thawadi, the Qatari lawyer who chairs the Qatar Film Committee and oversaw the 2022 FIFA World Cup soccer tournament. It follows similar deals with U.S. studios Neon, Miramax and Sony, announced on Friday.<\/p>\n
