Its gravity holds the solar system together, keeping everything \u2014 from the biggest planets to the smallest bits of debris \u2014 in its orbit.<\/p>\n<p>Live<\/p>\n<p>Recent Launch: NASA&#8217;s ESCAPADE Journey to Mars<\/p>\n<p class=\"margin-top-0\">NASA&#8217;s newest mission, ESCAPADE<br \/>(Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers) is scheduled to launch on Nov. 13, 2025,  from NASA\u2019s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The launch window opens at 2:57 p.m. EST. The mission will use two identical spacecraft to investigate how the solar wind interacts with Mars\u2019 magnetic environment and how this interaction drives the planet\u2019s atmospheric escape.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/escapade\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"button-primary button-primary-sm link-external-false\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tLearn about ESCAPADE                \t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Overview<\/p>\n<p>The Sun&#8217;s gravity holds the solar system together, keeping everything \u2013 from the biggest planets to the smallest particles of debris \u2013 in its orbit. The connection and interactions between the Sun and Earth drive the seasons, ocean currents, weather, climate, radiation belts and auroras. Though it is special to us, there are billions of stars like our Sun scattered across the Milky Way galaxy.<\/p>\n<p>The Sun has many names in many cultures. The Latin word for Sun is \u201csol,\u201d which is the main adjective for all things Sun-related: solar.<\/p>\n<p>Pop Culture<\/p>\n<p>The Sun has inspired us since ancient times. It\u2019s central to mythology and religion in cultures around the world, including the ancient Egyptians, the Aztecs of Mexico, Native American tribes of North and South America, the Chinese, and many others.<\/p>\n<p>Countless musicians have written songs about the Sun. The Beatles had a hit in 1969 with \u201cHere Comes the Sun.\u201d Other popular songs that reference the Sun include: \u201cWalkin\u2019 on the Sun\u201d by Smashmouth; \u201cAin\u2019t No Sunshine\u201d by Bill Withers; \u201cWalking on Sunshine\u201d by Katrina and the Waves; \u201cPocketful of Sunshine\u201d by Natasha Bedingfield; and \u201cLet the Sunshine In\u201d by the Fifth Dimension.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re Superman or a fellow Kryptonian of comic book fame, your powers are heightened by the yellow glow of our Sun.
