Funny-Face Club) manga revealed on Tuesday\u00a0the “leader visual” and cast for the handsome all-boy gang “Irootokogumi.” Snow Man<\/a> idol group member Daisuke Sakuma<\/a> will voice the leader Sh\u014d Kireide. (Similar to many of the story’s characters, Sh\u014d’s name is a wordplay that can be read as, “Isn’t he stunning?”)<\/p>\n

The gag comedy centers on a group of five idiosyncratic, wacky students, known in the school halls as Kimengumi, who all befriend the cutest girl in school and her best friend. Whereas the original manga (and its first television anime) were set in the 1980s, this new anime will set the story in the modern Reiwa era with a new cast.<\/p>\n

The new anime stars:<\/p>\n

Kazuaki Seki<\/a>\u00a0(live-action\u00a0Blank Canvas: My So-Called Artist\u2019s Journey<\/a>, Faking Beethoven, music videos for\u00a0Perfume\u00a0and\u00a0Gen Hoshino<\/a>) is directing his first anime at Animation Studio\u00a0Seven\u00a0with\u00a0Takashi Nishikawa<\/a>\u00a0(Strange+<\/a>,\u00a0Nobunaga Teacher’s Young Bride<\/a>) serving as the animation director.\u00a0Shigeru Murakoshi<\/a>\u00a0(Zombie Land Saga<\/a>,\u00a0The Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse<\/a>) is overseeing the series scripts, and\u00a0Yuka Abe<\/a>\u00a0(animation director on\u00a0Fire Force<\/a>,\u00a0Full Dive<\/a>) is designing the characters.\u00a0Night Tempo<\/a>\u00a0is producing the project’s songs, and\u00a0Slow Curve<\/a>\u00a0is planning and producing the project.<\/p>\n

The first anime’s theme song “Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi” gets a cover version by Shiraishi and Hasegawa, and is given a modern rearrangement by Night Tempo.<\/p>\n

The anime will premiere in January and will run in\u00a0Fuji TV<\/a>\u00a0network’s\u00a0Noitamina<\/a> programming block on Fridays at 11:30 p.m. (9:30 a.m. EST).<\/p>\n

The original story began in\u00a0Shueisha<\/a>‘s\u00a0Weekly Shonen Jump<\/a>\u00a0magazine as the\u00a03-Nen Kimengumi\u00a0(Third-Year Funny-Face Club) manga in September 1980. When the characters graduated from junior high school to high school, the story changed its title to\u00a0High School! Kimengumi, and continued running from 1982 to 1987.<\/p>\n

The first television anime aired for 86 episodes between 1985 and 1987, and its hit nationwide success spawned a film in 1986 with the working English title\u00a0Teenage Masked Tribe<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Hiroshi Fukutomi<\/a>\u00a0directed the first anime, and\u00a0Hatsuki Tsuji<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Hiroshi Kanazawa<\/a>\u00a0designed the characters.\u00a0Shunsuke Kikuchi<\/a>\u00a0composed the music. The anime starred\u00a0Issei Futamata<\/a>,\u00a0Kaneto Shiozawa<\/a>,\u00a0Miki Takahashi<\/a>,\u00a0Naoki Tatsuta<\/a>,\u00a0Naoko Matsui<\/a>,\u00a0Shigeru Chiba<\/a>, and\u00a0Tessh\u014d Genda<\/a>.<\/p>\n

REMOW<\/a>\u00a0offered<\/a>\u00a0the first anime with English subtitles for the first time on\u00a0YouTube<\/a>\u00a0this past summer.<\/p>\n
