{"id":158234,"date":"2025-11-25T05:02:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-25T05:02:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/158234\/"},"modified":"2025-11-25T05:02:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T05:02:08","slug":"macquarie-dictionary-announces-ai-slop-as-its-word-of-the-year-beating-out-ozempic-face-artificial-intelligence-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/158234\/","title":{"rendered":"Macquarie Dictionary announces \u2018AI slop\u2019 as its word of the year, beating out Ozempic face | Artificial intelligence (AI)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global\/commentisfree\/2025\/jan\/08\/ai-generated-slop-slowly-killing-internet-nobody-trying-to-stop-it\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI slop<\/a> is here, it\u2019s ubiquitous, it\u2019s being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/critics-notebook\/trump-is-the-emperor-of-ai-slop\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">used by the US president, Donald Trump<\/a>, and now, it\u2019s the word of the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Macquarie Dictionary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macquariedictionary.com.au\/macquarie-dictionary-word-of-the-year-for-2025\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dubbed the term<\/a> the epitome of 2025 linguistics, with a committee of word experts saying the outcome embodies the word of the year\u2019s general theme of reflecting \u201ca major aspect of society or societal change throughout the year\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe understand now in 2025 what we mean by slop \u2013 AI generated slop, which lacks meaningful content or use,\u201d the committee said in a statement announcing its decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhile in recent years we\u2019ve learnt to become search engineers to find meaningful information, we now need to become prompt engineers in order to wade through the AI slop. Slop in this sense will be a robust addition to English for years to come.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe question is, are the people ingesting and regurgitating this content soon to be called AI sloppers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The term was up against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macquariedictionary.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/WOTY_2025_shortlist.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a shortlist<\/a> of other cultural moments and terminology, including: Ozempic face (a condition resulting from the use of a semaglutide drug); blind box (a type of mystery box containing an unseen collectible); ate (and left no crumbs) (an expression used to indicate that someone has performed or executed something perfectly; and Roman Empire (a term for various events, interests or subjects, that one finds themselves frequently thinking about).<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Honourable mentions selected by the committee included clankers, a term for an artificial intelligence-driven robot which completes tasks that are normally performed by a human; and medical misogyny, referencing entrenched prejudice against women in the context of medical treatment and knowledge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The people\u2019s choice also went to AI slop, with honourable mentions for medical misogyny and the attention economy (an economy in which human attention is treated as a major commodity).<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The committee was made up of the editorial team at Macquarie Dictionary as well as the ABC language research specialist Tiger Webb and cryptic crossword legend David Astle, better known as DA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/culture\/books\/slop-of-the-pops-macquarie-dictionary-names-its-word-of-the-year-20251124-p5nhxw.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Astle wrote<\/a> that AI slop was this decade\u2019s equivalent of spam in a piece for the Sydney Morning Herald.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAI slop, to be precise, the clear victor of the Internet category,\u201d he wrote. \u201cHandily the barb can be packed into fusions, such as slopaganda, slop music and corpslop, to name three.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThough come the crunch, the robots won twice over. Not just their clanker slur, but the scrumptious slop they serve on demand. Trump has regularly uploaded videos featuring AI slop to his millions of followers, and was dubbed the \u201cemperor\u201d of such content by the New Yorker earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Domestically, the Australian Electoral Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aec.gov.au\/Elections\/electoral-advertising\/ai-and-elections.htm\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has warned<\/a> AI is being used more and more in many forms of communication, saying while there are some benefits, there are obvious negatives, too.
