{"id":158255,"date":"2025-11-25T05:19:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-25T05:19:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/158255\/"},"modified":"2025-11-25T05:19:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T05:19:09","slug":"unpaid-e790000-tax-bill-will-not-preclude-gerry-hutch-running-in-dublin-central-by-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/158255\/","title":{"rendered":"Unpaid \u20ac790,000 tax bill will not &#8216;preclude&#8217; Gerry Hutch running in Dublin Central by-election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gerry \u2018The Monk\u2019 Hutch will not be precluded from running in the Dublin Central by-election due to an unpaid Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) tax bill, the justice minister has said.<\/p>\n<p>Jim O\u2019Callaghan said there may be \u201cconsequences afterwards\u201d for Mr Hutch if he won a seat in the upcoming by-election, which is being prompted by the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/politics\/arid-41744604.html\"> resignation of former finance minister Paschal Donohoe<\/a> from the D\u00e1il last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The Fianna F\u00e1il TD said candidates needed to comply with existing electoral laws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cObviously, any candidate who wants to run has to comply with the provisions set out in the electoral acts as to who can and can&#8217;t be a candidate,\u201d Mr O\u2019Callaghan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIssues have to be resolved, if you have been served with a summons by CAB and you\u2019ve a tax bill that has to be met, that has to be met.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mr O\u2019Callaghan declined to comment on Mr Hutch directly, but said the Electoral Act was \u201cclear\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt doesn&#8217;t preclude somebody in his position from running as a candidate. However, there may be consequences afterwards,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It was first reported in the weekend media that Mr Hutch was being pursued by CAB over an unpaid tax bill of \u20ac790,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The Standards in Public Office Act requires all TDs elected to the D\u00e1il to provide it with a tax clearance certificate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">If this does not occur, Standards in Public Office can launch a formal investigation into the TD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">An Instagram purporting to be from Mr Hutch posted last Friday signalled he may be running in the upcoming by-election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI&#8217;ve been spending a lot of time lately listening, learning and connecting with people across our community,\u201d one picture post on the official Gerard Hutch Instagram account reads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI\u2019m grateful for all the support and encouragement along the way.
