{"id":158297,"date":"2025-11-25T05:56:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-25T05:56:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/158297\/"},"modified":"2025-11-25T05:56:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T05:56:11","slug":"gerry-hutch-may-have-to-pay-e800000-tax-bill-if-he-wins-dublin-central-byelection-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/158297\/","title":{"rendered":"Gerry Hutch may have to pay \u20ac800,000 tax bill if he wins Dublin Central byelection \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Electoral legislation does not prevent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gerry-hutch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gerry-hutch\/\">Gerry <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gerry-hutch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gerry-hutch\/\">\u201cThe Monk\u201d Hutch<\/a> running in the Dublin Central byelection, but there may be \u201cconsequences afterwards\u201d, the Minister for Justice has said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-ocallaghan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-ocallaghan\/\">Jim O\u2019Callaghan<\/a> said if a person has been served with a summons by the Criminal Assets Bureau (Cab) or an outstanding tax bill, \u201cthat has to be met\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr O\u2019Callaghan was speaking at Government Buildings in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a> on Monday, where he was questioned about Mr Hutch potentially running in the byelection. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI don\u2019t know who is going to win the Dublin Central byelection. Obviously, any candidate who wants to run has to comply with the provisions set out in the Electoral Act system \u2013 who can and can\u2019t be a candidate,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBut in terms of other issues, issues have to be resolved. If you have been served with a summons by Cab and if you have a tax bill that has to be met, that has to be met.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI don\u2019t want to get into the specifics of an individual, but if you look, the Electoral Act is clear, it doesn\u2019t preclude somebody in his [Mr Hutch\u2019s] position from running as a candidate. However, there may be consequences afterwards.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Garda\u00ed believe Mr Hutch will run in the D\u00e1il byelection and use the long build-up to the poll to try to register hundreds, even thousands, of new voters in Dublin\u2019s north inner city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Several senior officers said he is highly motivated to secure a D\u00e1il seat. They believe it is all but certain he will run in the Dublin Central byelection to replace former minister for finance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/video\/video\/2025\/11\/18\/paschal-donohoe-confirms-decision-to-depart-from-public-life-in-ireland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/video\/video\/2025\/11\/18\/paschal-donohoe-confirms-decision-to-depart-from-public-life-in-ireland\/\">Paschal Donohoe, who left politics last week<\/a> for a position at the World Bank in Washington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Garda\u00ed and political sources added that because Mr Hutch so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2024\/12\/01\/gerry-the-monk-hutch-loses-out-in-dublin-central-to-labours-marie-sherlock-in-count-nail-biter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2024\/12\/01\/gerry-the-monk-hutch-loses-out-in-dublin-central-to-labours-marie-sherlock-in-count-nail-biter\/\">narrowly missed out on winning a seat<\/a> in last year\u2019s general election, after securing 3,100 first-preference votes, he and his supporters now believe he could win a seat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The 62-year-old Dubliner teased another run for a D\u00e1il seat on social media after Mr Donohoe announced last week he was leaving politics. Mr Hutch pledged to \u201cupdate\u201d his supporters soon and described himself as the people\u2019s choice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Standards in Public Office Act 2001 introduced a tax-clearance requirement for all members of the D\u00e1il. Mr Hutch would not be eligible for the tax-clearance certificate unless he settled a recent demand for almost \u20ac800,000 by Cab.
