{"id":158475,"date":"2025-11-25T08:20:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-25T08:20:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/158475\/"},"modified":"2025-11-25T08:20:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T08:20:07","slug":"up-to-40-of-asylum-seeker-income-to-fund-accommodation-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/158475\/","title":{"rendered":"Up to 40% of asylum seeker income to fund accommodation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Asylum seekers would be obliged to contribute between 10% and 40% of their weekly income towards their State accommodation costs, under a plan to be considered by the Cabinet tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>Under the proposals, a person with a weekly income of up to \u20ac150 would have a potential contribution of \u20ac15; whereas a person earning up to \u20ac340 a week would be eligible to contribute around \u20ac83; and a person on \u20ac600 a week or more would contribute \u20ac238.<\/p>\n<p>It is expected the new model, if approved by ministers, could be operational by next year.<\/p>\n<p>Figures compiled by the Department of Justice last year suggest that around 7,600 people in the IPAS system would have been eligible to pay a contribution charge.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is anticipated that number will likely fall once the EU Migration and Asylum Pact becomes operational next June, as it is expected to result in a fall in the numbers seeking asylum.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of three measures being brought before the Cabinet tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>The other two relate to tightening rules around family reunification and increasing the residency requirement for citizenship from three to five years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/2025\/1123\/1545423-immigration-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Speaking on Sunday, Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin said: &#8220;We&#8217;ve always taken a humanitarian approach, but I think there is necessary tightening up that is required in terms of both the asylum process and in terms of the citizenship process in Ireland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s in essence, what is envisaged by these reforms,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Martin said the reforms had come before the party leaders and also before the Cabinet sub-committee.<\/p>\n<p>However the Irish Refugee Council warned that the proposed changes are &#8220;deeply alarming&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They severely undercut two key pillars of refugee integration: a clear route to citizenship and the ability to reunite with family,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Asylum seekers would be obliged to contribute between 10% and 40% of their weekly income towards their State&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":118227,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[42,43,40,38,41,39],"class_list":{"0":"post-158475","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-headlines","8":"tag-headlines","9":"tag-news","10":"tag-top-news","11":"tag-top-stories","12":"tag-topnews","13":"tag-topstories"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/158475","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=158475"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/158475\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/118227"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=158475"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=158475"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=158475"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
