Don\u2019t worry, guys, that viral video featuring a fake GTA 6 leak that was swiftly identified as AI was all a social experiment! Doesn\u2019t that automatically make the continued, extreme blurring between reality and AI-generated junk a bit better, because in this case, it was done to prove a point? No? Dang.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, Kotaku\u2018s Ethan Gach opined on<\/a> how the demand for news about Rockstar\u2019s long-awaited, repeatedly delayed game, coupled with the increasing ease with which your neighbor Bob can \u201ccreate\u201d pictures and videos with generative AI tools like ChatGPT, has made for a fake footage nightmare.<\/p>\n

On November 25, a verified Twitter\/X account named ZapActu GTA6<\/a> issued an \u201cEXTREMELY SERIOUS SITUATION\u201d alert on the platform and shared allegedly leaked footage that appeared to show GTA 6 protagonist Lucia walking around in the upcoming game\u2019s open world. The video, reportedly first shared on TikTok, showed off a \u201cdynamic weather system unlike anything seen in\u00a0GTA V\u201d\u00a0and \u201cshockingly lifelike NPCs\u201d and a \u201clevel of realism\u201d that was quite frankly astounding because it was all fake. The post sharing the video has since been deleted.<\/p>\n

IGN reports<\/a> that Zap Actu GTA6\u2019s Discord was buzzing with backlash after the fake footage leak, prompting them to issue a statement. They claimed the AI-generated GTA 6 videos were created \u201cto observe people\u2019s reactions and to demonstrate how easy it has become in 2025 to blur the line between reality and AI-generated content.\u201d They also said there were no \u201cbad intentions\u201d when they created and shared the fake videos.<\/p>\n

My intention was never to harm anyone. I simply wanted to create something intriguing that could bring people together and spark discussion within the GTA 6 community. I genuinely never expected a single video to generate such massive engagement and reach.<\/p>\n

In a much less apologetic message to IGN, Zap Actu said,\u00a0\u201cIt was a huge joke actually, I did it just to entertain the community. Sorry for the false hope lol.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cI was doing the bad thing to shine light on the bad thing\u201d excuse is one human beings have been using for years (and the same one I used when my parents found a box of candy wrappers under my bed a week before Halloween 1999). It\u2019s hard to believe someone who has dedicated a huge chunk of their internet presence to monitoring Grand Theft Auto news would have \u201cnever expected a single video to generate such massive engagement and reach,\u201d especially considering the lack of concrete\u00a0GTA 6\u00a0news over the last decade.<\/p>\n

Though Zap Actu claims they made no money from sharing the fake\u00a0GTA 6 leaks, they do have an active \u201cX Premium\u201d account. Those who subscribe to the X Premium get a blue check next to their name and are eligible for monetization if they have at least 500 verified followers (Zap Actu has over 4,000, though it\u2019s unclear how many are verified), have at least 5 million organic impressions in the last three months, and are in a supported country (Zap Actu\u2019s account states it\u2019s based in France).<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, as more and more AI content gets heaped onto the mostly unregulated slop pile that is Twitter, we should expect to encounter more fake GTA 6 content that can easily pass as real.
