{"id":167039,"date":"2025-11-30T04:24:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-30T04:24:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/167039\/"},"modified":"2025-11-30T04:24:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-30T04:24:08","slug":"man-handed-bag-of-cannabis-to-gardai-at-door-cork-court-told","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/167039\/","title":{"rendered":"Man handed bag of cannabis to garda\u00ed at door, Cork court told\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"contextmenu internal_Body1st\">A Waterford man handed over a bag of cannabis to garda\u00ed when they knocked on his front door, the district court has heard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Sergeant Majella O\u2019Sullivan told Youghal District Court that a search warrant was obtained to search the home of 29-year-old David Burke at Chapel Lane, Clashmore, Dungarvan, Co Waterford.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The court heard that when garda\u00ed knocked on the door on March 25, 2024, Burke opened it and immediately handed them a bag of cannabis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Burke, who was described as \u201ctrembling and nervous\u201d at the time, allowed them in and a further search recovered five other small amounts of cannabis in the property.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The total value of the cannabis recovered was estimated at \u20ac480, and \u20ac1,675 in cash was also seized during the search, as well as a digital scales. The court was told that Burke had no previous convictions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Apology<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">A letter of apology from Burke was handed into the court and his defence solicitor said \u201cthe guards had done him a favour\u201d by carrying out the search.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The court was told that Burke had fallen in with a \u201cpoor peer group\u201d at the time but had moved on and had not come to any garda attention since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The court was told that Burke was involved in vocational training and would soon begin a culinary course.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Judge Miriam Walsh said Burke seemed to have encountered a \u201cbump along the road\u201d but was now making an effort to get on with his life and put the matter behind him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">She noted he had no previous convictions and asked Burke to make donation of \u20ac200 to Saint Vincent de Paul.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The three charges \u2013 possession, possession for sale or supply and money laundering \u2013 were struck out.
