Earlier this month, homeowners in Boca Raton, Florida, were shocked to find a river otter swimming in their backyard pool. As adorable as the animal was, the homeowners were concerned for his health, so they called South Florida Wildlife Center<\/a> (SFWC) for help.<\/p>\n

A SFWC rescuer quickly arrived at the scene, secured the otter and transported him back to the rescue clinic. There, the wildlife veterinarians observed that the otter seemed to have muscle weakness, which was causing him to drag his body across the floor.<\/p>\n

\u201cThankfully, he was displaying normal behavior and was in good body condition, but was noted to be much quieter than expected for the species and age,\u201d Haillie Mesics, SFWC development associate and marketing specialist, told The Dodo.<\/p>\n

After numerous tests, including an ultrasound, an X-ray and a physical exam, the clinic staff came to the conclusion that the otter\u2019s main symptom was ataxia, or a lack of muscle coordination, that could have been caused by a head trauma, toxicity or an infectious disease.<\/p>\n

Because the staff didn\u2019t know much about the otter\u2019s history, they couldn\u2019t tell what had caused the ataxia, but they were still able to treat him. After a week of medication and intensive care, the otter seemed to be feeling a bit better.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs days went on, his appetite improved as well as his mentation, appearing brighter and alert,\u201d Mesics said.<\/p>\n

Once the otter was on the upswing, SFWC staff transferred him to an outdoor enclosure so he could begin reacclimating to his natural environment. They started him out in a shallow pool, but as they noticed his appetite start to increase and his limbs grow stronger, they moved him to deeper water.<\/p>\n

The rescuers were delighted to see that after just a few days of pool conditioning, the otter felt good as new. He seemed like a completely different animal from the weak, exhausted otter who\u2019d arrived at their facility just weeks before.<\/p>\n

It was finally time to return the fully healed otter to his home. The homeowners who\u2019d initially found the animal in their pool had noted that a river otter family lived in a pond in their backyard, so SFWC decided to release him there.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe always do our best to return wildlife to the area from which they were found, especially if they have group members in the same area,\u201d Mesics said.<\/p>\n

The day SFCW staff set the otter free, he darted toward the pond without hesitation and glided into the water effortlessly. It warmed the rescuers\u2019 hearts to see the strong, healthy animal join up with fellow members of his species.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce released, the otters took a moment to find each other and were reunited in the backyard pond, which is connected via canals and rivers to other waterways in the area,\u201d Mesics said.<\/p>\n
