The\u00a0Joint Research Centre (JRC)<\/a>\u00a0compiled a\u00a0Biomedical models Hub (BimmoH)<\/a>, \u00a0the largest public database of scientific articles making use of human biology-based models used in biomedical research. This dataset is a milestone in the EU\u2019s push for more human-centric science, aligning with the\u00a0Strategy for European Life Sciences<\/a>, which emphasises innovation in biotechnology while reducing animal testing.<\/p>\n

By consolidating information on models that rely on human biology, such as organ-on-a-chip systems, 3D cell cultures or computational models, BimmoH offers researchers a powerful tool to design more relevant studies and increase biomedical research translatability. This significant advancement marks a pivotal moment in the promotion of innovative research methodologies, making such models more accessible and promoting their wide adoption.<\/p>\n

Developed as part of an European Parliament Pilot Project<\/a>, BimmoH leverages AI to sift through millions of scientific papers, identifying and organising references to human biology-based models. Scientists can now easily access hundreds of thousands of curated resources, saving time and enabling faster breakthroughs. Regular updates will ensure the database stays up to date with the latest advancements in biomedical research.<\/p>\n

The impact of BimmoH extends beyond labs. Regulators, policymakers, funding bodies, and industry leaders can use the dataset to inform decisions, from exploratory science to drug development to safety assessments. For example, pharmaceutical companies might use it to test new medicines on human-relevant models, accelerating and improving outcomes. At the same time, in line with\u00a0EU\u2019s aim to phase out animal testing<\/a>, the dataset supports the Three Rs principle (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement of animal use in research), a key priority for EU animal welfare policies.<\/p>\n

This initiative reflects JRC\u2019s role as a bridge between science and policy, ensuring research serves societal needs identified by the European Commission in the\u00a0Strategy for European Life Sciences<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n
