But apparently there\u2019s one instance in which the president trusts doctors completely: when they tell him they\u2019ve run some unspecified tests on unspecified parts of his body and they all show he\u2019s astoundingly healthy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/intelligencer\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmiovwkot00233b79nvn49kd5@published\" data-word-count=\"112\">Trump has had a lot of <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/trumps-hand-bruise-health-updates.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">medical drama<\/a> this year; after months of speculation about his persistent hand bruise and leg swelling, the White House disclosed in June that he has <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/white-house-explains-trump-hand-bruise-swollen-legs.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chronic venous insufficiency<\/a>. Then on October 10, he went to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for what White House officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/trump-will-undergo-a-semiannual-physical-by-doctors#:~:text=Trump%20visits%20Walter%20Reed%20medical,&#039;semiannual%20physical&#039;%20%7C%20PBS%20News\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">called<\/a> a \u201croutine yearly checkup.\u201d This raised some questions right off the bat, as Trump already had his annual physical in April. A <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/kaitlancollins\/status\/1976813851258896535\" rel=\"nofollow\">memo<\/a> from the White House physician, Dr. Sean Barbabella, led to even more confusion, as it said vaguely that the October visit \u201cincluded advanced imaging, laboratory testing, and preventative health assessments\u201d and the results were all \u201cexceptional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/intelligencer\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmiow55ws002a3b79tp46elbb@published\" data-word-count=\"29\">When a reporter asked Trump if \u201cadvanced imaging\u201d meant an MRI, he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/atrupar\/status\/1982784422106550321\" rel=\"nofollow\">said \u201cyes<\/a>.\u201d So why did the president have this test? He seemed totally unconcerned with such details.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/intelligencer\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmiowhmey002o3b791t49mj9w@published\" data-word-count=\"49\">\u201cThe doctor said it was the best result he has ever seen as a doctor,\u201d Trump said on November 14. \u201cI have no idea what they analyzed. But whatever they analyzed, they analyzed it well and they said that I had as good a result as they\u2019ve ever seen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Trump: I had an MRI and the result was outstanding.<\/p>\n<p>Reporter: Was it your brain?<\/p>\n<p>Trump: I have no idea what they analyzed, but whatever they analyzed, they analyzed it well. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uMhkBu0RUU\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/uMhkBu0RUU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Acyn (@Acyn) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Acyn\/status\/1989514749504360781?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">November 15, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/intelligencer\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmiowm6tr00323b792km09d14@published\" data-word-count=\"44\">By November 30, the elective MRI had become more of a political issue, as Democrats including Minnesota governor Tim Walz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/12\/01\/karoline-leavitt-trump-mri-00671504\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">called on<\/a> Trump to release details on the tests and their results. But Trump couldn\u2019t even say what part of his body was scanned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/intelligencer\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmiowtb89003n3b79r0vusv1q@published\" data-word-count=\"45\">\u201cIt wasn\u2019t the brain because I took a cognitive test and aced it,\u201d he told a reporter. Barbabella <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/10\/27\/trump-walter-reed-test-cognitive-results\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> Trump got a perfect score on the\u00a0Montreal Cognitive Assessment in April, but it\u2019s unclear if Trump was referring to this or additional testing for cognitive impairment.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/POTUS?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@POTUS<\/a> nukes the Fake News on his MRI: &#8220;It&#8217;s perfect. It&#8217;s like my phone call where I got impeached, it&#8217;s absolutely perfect&#8230; It wasn&#8217;t the brain because I took a cognitive test and I aced it. A new memo from Barbabella began:<\/p>\n<p>As part of President Donald J. Trump\u2019s comprehensive executive physical, advanced imaging was performed because men in his age group benefit from a thorough evaluation of cardiovascular and abdominal health. The purpose of this imaging is preventative: to identify issues early, confirm overall health, and ensure he maintains long-term vitality and function.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Summary of President Donald J. Trump&#8217;s Advanced Imaging Results <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOverall, his cardiovascular system shows excellent health.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JVdXNRLhuh\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/JVdXNRLhuh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Olga Nesterova (@onestpress) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/onestpress\/status\/1995570680377856241?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">December 1, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/intelligencer\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmioubywk000u3b797i10utam@published\" data-word-count=\"65\">While the memo offers some clues about what testing Trump received, with references to \u201cno evidence of arterial narrowing\u201d and \u201cabdominal imaging,\u201d it still doesn\u2019t name any specific tests. And multiple doctors told the press that they remain stumped, since \u201cpreventative\u201d imaging is not recommended for people with no symptoms. Such testing could produce false positives, leading to stress for the patient and unnecessary procedures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/intelligencer\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmioxmmal004k3b79c4g50c3a@published\" data-word-count=\"34\">Dr. Ron Blankstein, a preventative cardiologist at Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital in Boston, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/12\/01\/health\/trump-mri-results.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> the New York Times that the memo suggests Trump might have had a stress test to rule out heart disease:<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Blankstein also highlighted the phrase \u201cno evidence of arterial narrowing limiting blood flow.\u201d It suggests, he said, that the president underwent a stress test, which could mean a doctor suspected or wanted to rule out heart disease. Most standard M.R.I. exams, he said, do not show the coronary arteries.<\/p>\n<p>But there is a specialized M.R.I. scan, known as a cardiac stress exam, in which patients are given a medication that increases blood flow to the heart and then asked to lie in an M.R.I. machine for a scan. If the results are abnormal, that can indicate one or more coronary arteries is narrowed. But, Dr. Blankstein said, \u201ca normal stress test, while reassuring that there is no critical flow limiting disease, does not rule out the possibility of coronary artery disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStress tests are often not required in individuals who do not have symptoms\u201d or cardiac disease, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/intelligencer\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmioxfpx500473b79rwa3hb57@published\" data-word-count=\"37\">Dr. Jonathan Reiner, who was Dick Cheney\u2019s cardiologist for more than 30 years, agreed in an interview with CNN, saying that there \u201creally is no preventative cardiac MRI\u201d and the unnecessary abdominal imaging is odd as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/intelligencer\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmioxqtan004r3b79lqsg3j5g@published\" data-word-count=\"72\">\u201cThis obviously was performed in response to some clinical concern, which is fine.
