\u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy\u201d alum Eric Dane<\/a> gave an update Tuesday on his life with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis<\/a>, the debilitating nervous system condition commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n

After first sharing his diagnosis with the public<\/a> in April, Dane has become an ambassador for the nonprofit I AM ALS<\/a>. He joined the group\u2019s co-founders on Tuesday for a virtual panel<\/a> that also featured \u201cBrilliant Minds\u201d creator Michael Grassi.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have no reason to be in a good spirit at any time, on any given day,\u201d Dane told the panel, adding, \u201cI don\u2019t think anybody would blame me if I went upstairs in my bedroom, crawled under the sheets, and spent the next two weeks crying.\u201d <\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cI was a little bit pleasantly surprised when I realized that I wasn\u2019t built like that, because I thought for sure that was gonna be me.\u201d<\/p>\n

While continuing his acting career has been a challenge, Dane did recently star on \u201cBrilliant Minds\u201d<\/a> as a firefighter who is having a hard time telling his wife that he\u2019s been diagnosed with ALS. It was his first onscreen role since the actor announced his own real-life condition, according to People<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dane called that experience \u201cone of a kind\u201d on Tuesday, and suggested he\u2019d found a newfound purpose in sharing his journey with as many people as possible, \u201cbecause I don\u2019t feel like my life is about me anymore.\u201d <\/p>\n

There is currently no cure for ALS, which is progressive and worsens over time.<\/p>\n

Dane revealed in June that he only had \u201cone functioning arm\u201d<\/a> as a result of the condition, which affects<\/a> nerve cells in both the brain and spinal cord and causes a loss of muscle control.<\/p>\n

As an I AM ALS ambassador, Dane has met with<\/a> Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) in Washington and shared his personal testimony<\/a> at a press conference led by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/p>\n

The actor said Tuesday that he\u2019s trying to advocate for more research into ALS to \u201cimprove the landscape,\u201d which he described as \u201cso rocky and littered with hurdles and bureaucracy and all this other nonsense that we\u2019re trying to sift through so we can get to a place where we can start working on solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n

His efforts come during a precarious time: The 2021 Accelerating Access to Critical Therapies for ALS Act<\/a>, which provides people with early access to treatments and secured five years of federal funding for related research, is set to expire next year<\/a>.<\/p>\n
