Together with a friend he hit the road and headed north. They wouldn\u2019t return home for seven months.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z800033b6nzhiopwqv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Their journey was Compion\u2019s first exposure to the Rift \u2014 also known as the East African Rift System \u2014 which carves its way 4,000 miles from Botswana and Mozambique in the south to Djibouti and the Red Sea in the north, and up into Jordan. Formed by tectonic plates slowly tearing apart, its valleys wend through 11 countries, growing inch by inch, until one day, many millions of years from now, the sea will begin to flood the land; a stark and beautiful reminder of the impermanence of all things.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z800043b6nj7twv46d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On his road trip, Compion ventured to Nakuru, Kenya, where the land drops away and Lake Nakuru stretches out with enormous drifts of pink flamingos, framed by mountains in the distance. \u201cThat was quite a seminal moment,\u201d he reflected. \u201cIt all came together for me right there.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/credit-shem-compion-the-rift-1.jpg\" alt=\"Elephants on the grasslands of the Serengeti, Tanzania. The giant mammals are mostly in search of acacia seedlings, says Compion, contributing to the open landscape.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2038\" width=\"2800\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z800053b6nulgh0g2m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Compion, who trained in conservation and wildlife management, has operated safaris along the Rift while photographing its landscapes, wildlife and peoples for over 20 years. His portfolio has now been compiled into his seventh book and first art book, \u201cThe Rift: Scar of Africa,\u201d a grand project that seeks to capture its awe and abundance.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z800063b6nztr8b7g8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The book unfolds across five chapters, exploring the geological origins of the Rift, hominid evolution, its human inhabitants today, biodiversity, and the impact of the Anthropocene \u2014 the time period human activity has had a significant impact on the planet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z800073b6no79xjdag@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Compion describes the book as \u201cpart celebration, part bringing together science and conservation.\u201d He solicited a range of specialists to speak to his images, including volcanologist David Pyle and anthropologist Veronica Waweru, along with notable figures such as artist Ngwatilo Mawiyoo and Hailemariam Desalegn, former prime minister of Ethiopia.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z800083b6nbvehnsr2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That said, many of the photographs speak for themselves \u2014 and the intrepid photographer.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/credit-shem-compion-the-rift-16.jpg\" alt=\"A camel caravan steered by a member of the Afar crosses the landscape of northern Ethiopia. The Danakil Depression is among the world's most arid places, but when Compion visited, it rained.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1753\" width=\"2800\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z800093b6nktnch4qv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For the book\u2019s opening chapter, Compion wanted to capture the lava pool of Tanzanian volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai at night. His guide, he said, \u201ctook some convincing\u201d to let them climb through the day in 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) heat to get there. Then, 10 minutes after reaching the summit, a storm came in.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000a3b6nmmobe96n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe had a tiny pup tent where the four of us slept, sandwiched in like sardines,\u201d Compion recalled. \u201cWe lay as the rain battered the tent all night. We woke up in the morning, the storm was still going, and we descended with our tails between our legs. On that occasion, we got no photographs at all.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000b3b6nq5gb61cf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The failure prompted him to visit volcano Erta Ale in the Danakil Depression, Ethiopia. \u201cThey call (the area) the driest and hottest place on the planet,\u201d he said. \u201cI got there and it rained.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000c3b6n317nx6tl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2016\/04\/06\/africa\/djibouti-afar-geology\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Afar<\/a>, a nomadic people living in the area, known for mining its salt flats, can endure heat, but Compion said the jump in humidity caused even the Afar to pass out. The photographer, armed with sachets of rehydration salts, was the closest thing to medical help for miles.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/credit-shem-compion-the-rift-13.jpg\" alt=\"Detailed beadwork worn by a Samburu woman in Kenya.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2800\" width=\"2100\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000d3b6npiud9191@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Compion has sought out many peoples and tribes living along the Rift, developing connections with communities as he\u2019s visited as a safari guide or simply a photographer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000e3b6n4kgitx1g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Omo Valley in Ethiopia is among the most diverse locations, home to the Bodi, Suri, Karo, Kwegu tribes and more.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000f3b6nujqouh7r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIn those areas the tourism is unregulated,\u201d he said, \u201cand so normally with unregulated tourism practices you get bad behavior.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000g3b6nxym0vmnt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI wanted to avoid that and go right deep into the Omo,\u201d Compion added. \u201cWe go there with small groups, so we can keep control over the relationship that we have with the tribespeople we are living with. We take that responsibility quite seriously, because we want a beautiful quid pro quo between everyone.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000h3b6nb8jzizz9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Among the people that have affected him the most is the Suri (part of the Surma people), famous for their lip discs and brass bracelets.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000i3b6nr9matvb8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Compion learned schoolchildren were being taught in Amharic, the common language in Ethiopia, instead of their native tongue, and it was affecting their education, he said. So the photographer teamed up with language development nonprofit SIL Ethiopia to raise funds to train teachers to teach in Suri \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/give.sil.org\/campaign\/suri-community-literacy\/c492188\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a program already helping 500 students<\/a> each year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000j3b6nkleyww7q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s a small project in the greater scheme of things, but it helps us build incredible relationships,\u201d said Compion. \u201cI\u2019m going to be down there three times in 2026 \u2026 I can\u2019t wait, because these (people) are now my friends.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/240621-sco-0255.jpg\" alt=\"Waterbuck antelope on a misty morning at Gorongosa. The National Park is regularly blanketed in sea mist blowing in from the Mozambique coast.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"5504\" width=\"8256\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000k3b6ne0qyzns5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He has also befriended conservationists, including the late Marc Stalmans, whose incredible legacy is the restoration of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/inside-africa-gorongosa-national-park-spc-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gorongosa National Park<\/a> in Mozambique, from a decimated hunting ground during years of civil war to a thriving biodiversity hotspot.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000l3b6n3tfhzlkw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Compion remembers Stalmans as a scientist with \u201claser-like\u201d focus, whether caring for his students or an entire national park. \u201cFor 20 years he wore Gorongosa on his sleeve. His passion was only matched by his incredibly detailed knowledge of every subject in Gorongosa\u2019s magnificent ecosystem.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000m3b6n67in5axj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the 4,000 square kilometer (1,544 square mile) park, herbivore numbers have exploded in recent years \u2014 particularly antelope \u2014 creating plentiful food for predators including lions, whose population has rebounded among Gorongosa\u2019s woods and grasslands. It\u2019s just one of the conservation wins Compion highlights along the Rift.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/080912sco-01385.jpg\" alt=\"A giraffe in the long grass of Nairobi National Park, a fenced reserve that borders the Kenyan capital.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2541\" width=\"3825\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000n3b6n8us6zdtu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Rift Valley is also becoming more urbanized. Nairobi and Addis Ababa sit directly on its borders, and are the most obvious symbols of modernization, but in Compion\u2019s book, signs of development abound. Some are imposing but benign: a wind farm on a hillside, for example. Others, like a fisherman hauling in a net at dusk, point more subtly at problems raised by the Anthropocene.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000o3b6ny01sgibt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Compion says alongside desertification, food security \u2014 especially the depletion of fish stocks in major lakes \u2014 is his biggest concern for the Rift. Though he\u2019s seen enough to remain optimistic.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000p3b6nq19k8dzk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAll across Africa, there\u2019s a groundswell of momentum (arguing) that local knowledge, Indigenous leadership, regenerative practices are the way forward,\u201d he explained.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000q3b6n0uao0bg8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One example he witnessed is a small agricultural change near the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. Terraced farmers are keeping more trees in place, using their root systems to prevent soil erosion, boosting their harvests \u2014 a change helping transition subsistence farmers into growers of cash crops, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000r3b6nswaxhxtq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou make leaps and bounds in peoples\u2019 lives \u2014 and the environment \u2014 whilst using Indigenous and traditional methods of working,\u201d Compion added.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/181103-sco-3664.jpg\" alt=\"Small-scale farming in the Ethiopian Highlands. Compion says new agricultural practices on the terraced plots near the capital Addis Ababa are helping harvests and making farming more sustainable.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1929\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000s3b6ncspvhu4n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The ongoing search for harmony between all the Rift\u2019s occupants is a throughline of Compion\u2019s book. He knows what is possible, but also what could be lost.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000t3b6nrj4ui3a2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI don\u2019t necessarily see wildlife, landscape and humanity as separate realms, but more as a single interwoven system of cause and effect,\u201d he explains. \u201cThere\u2019s a great ecological reciprocity in the Rift Valley, because your human choices ripple through ecosystems, and those ecosystems in turn define human possibility.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000u3b6naw0n8mll@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAfrica,\u201d he added, \u201chas been a great teacher in the sense of, where time and empathy are invested into solutions, then coexistence becomes very sustainable.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000v3b6neq395rkv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite his latest book being such a long-term project, Compion knew it would be impossible to cover the valley in its entirety. He believes he still has much to discover about a place he describes as a beautiful \u201cparadox;\u201d a geological feature tearing the continent apart while binding so many people together. And he\u2019s not done exploring yet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z8000w3b6n4g2i2ox1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe more curious you are and the more you dig, the more you\u2019ll find, and the more treasures will be unearthed,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminbn3z9000x3b6n5ybroj60@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe Rift: Scar of Africa\u201d is published by HPH Publishing is available now.\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"South African photographer Shem Compion remembers precisely when his love affair with the Great Rift Valley began.
