It was an unconventional decision, and a brilliant one. Raj Kapoor’s voice, his emotion-soaked singing, and Shankar–Jaikishan’s melodies carried the story across languages. Kapoor’s portrayal of a resilient, romantic everyman resonated deeply with Soviet audiences, especially in the post-World War II era. His character embodied hope, resilience, and the pursuit of justice – values that mirrored the Soviet zeitgeist.A cultural ambassadorThe impact of Awara didn’t fade with time, in fact, it sparked a cultural wave. The film opened the doors for Indian cinema across the Soviet Union, and Kapoor’s later works like Shree 420 and Sangam only deepened his hold on Russian audiences. Tunes such as Mera Joota Hai Japani and Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan soon became staples in Soviet homes.

Even decades on, the affection remained unmistakable. During Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Moscow in 2011, the Kremlin’s Presidential Orchestra performed Awaara Hoon, a quiet, resonant nod to a timeless connection and to Kapoor’s enduring magic.

Beyond cinema, Raj Kapoor became a cultural ambassador, strengthening the ties between India and the Soviet Union.

From Moscow to Georgia, he wasn’t merely an actor; he was a bridge between cultures, a beacon of optimism, and a reminder of cinema’s universal language. His legacy in the USSR remains a unique chapter in Bollywood’s history, reflecting the unparalleled power of art to transcend borders.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently called him a pioneer of India’s soft power. “In the diplomatic world, we talk a lot about soft power. And at a time when this phrase didn’t even exist, Raj Kapoor sahab established India’s soft power all over the world. It was his big service to India,” PM Modi said while meeting the Kapoor family.

As President Putin prepares to touch down in India to ink key agreements, the warmth once reserved for Raj Kapoor serves as a subtle reminder: cultural bonds can outlast time, and the magic of cinema still casts its shadow across diplomacy and friendship.

It was the 1950s, and Moscow airport was packed.
