{"id":177237,"date":"2025-12-05T21:51:09","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T21:51:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/177237\/"},"modified":"2025-12-05T21:51:09","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T21:51:09","slug":"council-to-increase-cost-of-eco-sense-bags-to-e12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/177237\/","title":{"rendered":"Council to increase cost of Eco Sense bags to \u20ac12"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kerry County Council plans to increase the cost of a four-pack of Eco Sense bags by 20% to \u20ac12.<\/p>\n<p>Corca Dhuibhne\u00a0councillor Robert Brosnan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiokerry.ie\/podcasts\/talkabout\/rise-in-cost-of-eco-sense-bags-463048\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spoke against the increase<\/a> when it was announced by management at the recent 2026 budget meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The pre-paid Eco Sense bags allow the public to recycle a full bag of mixed dry refuse at any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kerrycoco.ie\/activities-at-civic-amenity-sites\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kerry Civic Amenity Site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Director of finance at Kerry County Council, Angela McAllen said there are substantial costs in operating the recycling service.<\/p>\n<p>Ms McAllen said new contracts came into effect on 1st November (2025) resulting in a 22% increase to the council\u2019s costs.<\/p>\n<p>She said under the polluter pays principle, those responsible for creating the rubbish, should bear the cost of cleanup.<\/p>\n<p>When initially introduced, the bags cost \u20ac8 per four-pack; this rose to \u20ac10 in January 2023, but from January 2026 will cost \u20ac12.<\/p>\n<p>Councillor Robert Brosnan said the \u20ac2 per pack increase penalises the very people doing the right thing.<\/p>\n<p>He argued that Kerry County Council has issued fewer litter fines despite more illegal dumping in the county.<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Brosnan said it would be better to issue and collect litter fines, than increase the cost of recycling.<\/p>\n<p>Director of finance, Angela McAllen admitted it was \u201cdisappointing\u201d to have to raise the price, but that contract prices for the council have gone up by 22%.<\/p>\n<p>She said when the cost of Eco Sense bags was last increased, it followed a 43% increase in contract costs.<\/p>\n<p>This is an executive function of council management meaning councillors don\u2019t get a vote on this issue.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Kerry County Council plans to increase the cost of a four-pack of Eco Sense bags by 20% to&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":177238,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[72,96817,61,60],"class_list":["post-177237","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-business","tag-business","tag-eco","tag-ie","tag-ireland"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/177237","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=177237"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/177237\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/177238"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=177237"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=177237"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=177237"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
