As senators urge Prime Minister Mark Carney to outlaw sports gambling ads in Canada, we revisit our recent ‘Closer Look’ episode about the dangers these commercials pose to children and teens<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a safe bet: If you watch a hockey game tonight, you\u2019re going to see a gambling commercial. They\u2019re impossible to miss these days.<\/p>\n

But as doctors continue to sound the alarm<\/a> \u2014 warning parents that all those gambling commercials pose a major risk<\/a> to children and teens \u2014 a group of senators is demanding action. More than 40 have signed a petition<\/a> urging Prime Minister Mark Carney to ban all gambling ads in Canada.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople of all ages [are] exposed to a constant stream of advertisements promising a \u2018premium gaming experience\u2019 and urging them to turn their phone into a pocket-sized casino,\u201d the petition letter reads. \u201cWe are asking for a ban on all advertising for sports gambling apps and websites. Such a measure would be similar to the advertising ban for cigarettes, and for the same reason: to address a public health problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

Back in September, the Canadian Medical Association Journal issued the same call to action<\/a> in a much-publicized editorial<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s simply ridiculous we’re allowing this,\u201d said Dr. Shannon Charlebois, the co-author of the editorial, during a recent interview<\/a> on Village Media\u2019s Closer Look<\/a> podcast. \u201cWe don’t allow cigarette commercials, and we don’t allow cocaine commercials \u2014 which also ruins lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the podcast interview, Charlebois also had some pointed words for high-profile athletes like Connor McDavid and Wayne Gretzky, who’ve starred\u00a0in ads for sports betting companies.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese people are good at what they do. What they do is hockey and not ethics,\u201d she said. \u201cIf they don’t do it, somebody else will do it. I’m not impressed with them, and I would give them a good tongue-lashing if I had them in front of me.\u201d<\/p>\n
