{"id":178908,"date":"2025-12-07T07:22:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-07T07:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/178908\/"},"modified":"2025-12-07T07:22:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-07T07:22:11","slug":"numbers-up-calculators-hold-out-against-ai-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/178908\/","title":{"rendered":"Number\u2019s up: Calculators hold out against AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">TOKYO &#8211; The humble pocket calculator may not be able to keep up with the mathematical capabilities of new technology, but it will never hallucinate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The device\u2019s enduring reliability equates to millions of sales each year for Japan\u2019s Casio, which is even eyeing expansion in certain regions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Despite lightning-speed advances in artificial intelligence, chatbots still sometimes stumble on basic addition. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In contrast, \u201ccalculators always give the correct answer\u201d, Casio executive Tomoaki Sato told AFP. But he conceded that calculators could one day go the way of the abacus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cIt\u2019s undeniable that the market for personal calculators used in business is on a downward trend,\u201d Mr Sato said in Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Smartphones and web browsers can handle everyday sums, while AI models achieved gold-level scores for the first time at a prestigious global maths contest in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But calculators are more affordable than phones, and run on batteries and solar power \u2013 a plus for schools in developing countries, a potential growth area for Casio, Mr Sato said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">And people who do buy calculators prefer the way they feel, he argued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ms Thitinan Suntisubpool, co-owner of a shop selling red bags and beckoning cats in Bangkok\u2019s Chinatown, said she loves how durable her big calculator is, having dropped it several times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cIt\u2019s more convenient in many ways,\u201d the 58-year-old told AFP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe can use it to press the numbers and show the customer\u201d, avoiding language-barrier misunderstandings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But at a nearby street stall selling clocks, torches and calculators, the vendor, who gave her name as Da, said calculator sales were \u201cquiet\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" Thailand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cNot everywhere in the world has smartphone connectivity, and calculators are optimised tools focused on necessary functions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">That compares to 45 million in 2019 to 2020, but is still up from the 31 million that sold the following year after the Covid-19 pandemic hit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The company has come a long way from the href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/world\/europe\/christies-suspends-paris-sale-of-worlds-first-calculator?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">suspended the Paris sale of an early calculating machine<\/p>\n<p><\/a>, La Pascaline, after a court said it could not be taken abroad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The auction house called the ebony-decorated 1642 device \u201cthe first attempt in history to substitute the human mind with a machine\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Those attempts have accelerated with AI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In July, AI models made by Google, OpenAI and DeepSeek reached gold-level scores at the annual International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But neither attained full marks at the annual contest for under-20s, unlike five human participants who achieved perfect scores.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">IMO president Gregor Dolinar called the progress of artificial intelligence in the field \u201cfascinating\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWhen we talk about scientific calculators, in the past you needed them, but nowadays it\u2019s easier to just ask AI,\u201d he told AFP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cIf you pose the question in the right way\u201d, artificial intelligence can crunch abstract, logical questions and show how it reached its conclusion, Dr Dolinar said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Dr Dolinar, a professor in engineering at the University of Ljubljana, thinks physical calculators are likely to \u201cslowly disappear\u201d \u2013 something that has already happened for his students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThey can calculate everything on a phone,\u201d he said.
