If you want to see the Mona Lisa in real life, your first thought may not be to head to the Pra\u00addo<\/a>. But accord\u00ading to a school of thought that has emerged in recent years, the\u00a0Mona Lisa in Madrid has a greater claim to artis\u00adtic faith\u00adful\u00adness than the one in Paris. That\u2019s because researchers have dis\u00adcov\u00adered com\u00adpelling evi\u00addence<\/a> sug\u00adgest\u00ading that what was long con\u00adsid\u00adered just anoth\u00ader copy of the most famous paint\u00ading in the world was\u00adn\u2019t made after Leonar\u00addo had com\u00adplet\u00aded the orig\u00adi\u00adnal, but con\u00adcur\u00adrent\u00adly with the orig\u00adi\u00adnal, prob\u00ada\u00adbly by one of his stu\u00addents. Over half a mil\u00adlen\u00adni\u00adum, in this view, the Prado\u2019s Mona Lisa<\/a> has retained the col\u00adors and details the Lou\u00advre\u2019s has lost, result\u00ading in its preser\u00adva\u00adtion of Leonar\u00addo\u2019s inten\u00adtions today.<\/p>\n

Infrared pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adphy has even revealed, says the nar\u00adra\u00adtor of the new Inspi\u00adrag\u00adgio video above<\/a>, that both paint\u00adings \u201cshare the same changes in the orig\u00adi\u00adnal sketch. For years, it has been known that Leonar\u00addo made small cor\u00adrec\u00adtions to the shape of the\u00a0Mona Lisa\u2019s hands, adjust\u00adments to the line of the eyes, and sub\u00adtle mod\u00adi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtions to the curve of the face,\u201d the very same cor\u00adrec\u00adtions that were found in the new\u00adly exam\u00adined copy.<\/p>\n

Unlike oth\u00ader copies, the Prado\u2019s ver\u00adsion uses \u201cincred\u00adi\u00adbly expen\u00adsive pig\u00adments\u201d such as lapis lazuli\u2014imported from Afghanistan\u2014for the sky. This only became evi\u00addent dur\u00ading the 2012 restora\u00adtion, when the back\u00adground, long hid\u00adden under a thick lay\u00ader of black, was final\u00adly uncov\u00adered.<\/p>\n

There\u00adafter, the Pra\u00addo\u00a0Mona Lisa\u00a0was exhib\u00adit\u00aded along\u00adside the Mona Lisa at the Lou\u00advre in a tem\u00adpo\u00adrary exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion. This gave the pub\u00adlic the chance to see both how sim\u00adi\u00adlar they look, and how dif\u00adfer\u00adent. Though unde\u00adni\u00adably\u00a0La Gio\u00adcon\u00adda, the copy does\u00adn\u2019t seem quite \u201cright,\u201d in large part because it has\u00adn\u2019t dete\u00adri\u00ado\u00adrat\u00aded in the man\u00adner or to the degree of the orig\u00adi\u00adnal. Leonar\u00addo paint\u00aded it on a poplar wood pan\u00adel that has giv\u00aden way to count\u00adless small cracks, and the lay\u00aders of yel\u00adlow var\u00adnish added over the cen\u00adturies have dark\u00adened to give the whole image a sepia tone. The result, of course, is the tex\u00adture and col\u00ador\u00ading we\u2019ve come to asso\u00adciate with the Mona Lisa by cease\u00adless expo\u00adsure to her in pop\u00adu\u00adlar cul\u00adture, even if we\u2019ve nev\u00ader seen any ver\u00adsion hang\u00ading in any muse\u00adum. If the Prado\u2019s copy real\u00adly does reflect\u00a0Leonar\u00addo\u2019s orig\u00adi\u00adnal artis\u00adtic choic\u00ades, we can put at least one hot\u00adly debat\u00aded mat\u00adter to rest:\u00a0the lady real\u00adly did have eye\u00adbrows.<\/p>\n
