The Health Service Executive has started offering compensation to victims of the HSE cyberattack that occurred in May 2021.<\/p>\n
The HSE has not confirmed the amounts involved but it is understood that the approximately 620 people taking legal action will each be offered \u20ac750.<\/p>\n
They will also be offered \u20ac650 towards their legal costs.<\/p>\n
Last year, the HSE said it had written to all of the people affected by the cyberattack and that the final number contacted was 90,936 individuals.<\/p>\n
On 14 May 2021, a major ransomware attack caused widespread disruption and saw information held on computer systems illegally accessed and copied.<\/p>\n
Cybercriminals, linked to the Russian hacking group Conti, carried out the ransomware attack.<\/p>\n
An investigation into the breach found that the HSE was operating on a frail IT system and did not have proper cyber expertise or resources.<\/p>\n
The HSE said today that as of November 2025, there have been approximately 620 legal proceedings issued against it arising from the cyberattack.<\/p>\n
“The HSE is working closely with the State Claims Agency in relation to this matter and is engaging with legal representatives accordingly,” a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
“These legal matters between the HSE and effected individuals are confidential,” they added.<\/p>\n
The HSE said that since the cyberattack it has invested significantly in its cyber defence capabilities.<\/p>\n
