{"id":183187,"date":"2025-12-09T16:25:09","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T16:25:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/183187\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T16:25:09","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T16:25:09","slug":"you-must-wear-a-mask-in-public-if-you-have-a-cold-nhs-chief-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/183187\/","title":{"rendered":"You must wear a mask in public if you have a cold, NHS chief says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>People with flu or cold symptoms should get back into the habit of wearing a mask in public places amid a \u201ctidal wave\u201d of illness, an NHS leader has said.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Elkeles, the chief executive of NHS Providers, which represents NHS trusts, said the country was beset by a \u201cvery nasty strain of flu\u201d that had occurred earlier in the season than normal.<\/p>\n<p>He told <a href=\"https:\/\/app.times.radio\/\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Times Radio<\/a>: \u201cChildren are still at school, it\u2019s warm and wet, so it\u2019s perfect flu-spreading conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you were talking about anything like Covid, I think we need to get back into the habit that if you are coughing and sneezing, but you\u2019re not unwell enough to not go to work, then you must wear a mask when you\u2019re in public spaces \u2014 including on public transport \u2014 to stop the chances of you giving your virus to somebody else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"People on a London Underground train, most wearing masks.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/\/de0e9072-ebaa-4ff0-a8cf-1a20c62b26a7.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Wearing masks could help limit the spread of winter bugs<\/p>\n<p>GUY BELL\/ALAMY<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Elkeles added: \u201cWe were all very good about infection control during Covid. And we really, really need to get back to that now.\u201d When asked if people who have a cold and are coughing should wear a mask in the office, he said: \u201cI think that would be very sensible to all their colleagues, or probably their colleagues would say, \u2018Please go home.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cWe have really got to worry about the fact that this is a very nasty strain of flu. It spreads very easily. It\u2019s warm and wet out there and people need to be sensible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Downing Street said wearing a mask to prevent the spread of respiratory illness was \u201csomething people can consider\u201d after Elkeles recommended the wider use of face coverings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">A No 10 spokesman said: \u201cThere is long-standing guidance in place for people on a range of measures they can consider taking to help limit the spread of winter bugs if they have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/life-style\/health-fitness\/article\/carrie-johnson-had-pneumonia-do-you-risk-contracting-it-f67hrl953\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flu-like symptoms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cThis is neither new nor an instruction, but simply something people can consider when trying to limit the spread of winter respiratory illnesses. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cThe best defence against flu is the vaccine, which is why we\u2019re ramping up our vaccination efforts this winter, with almost 17 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/healthcare\/article\/hospitals-told-to-boost-flu-jabs-among-staff-after-vaccination-slump-fqr02dgx7\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flu jabs<\/a> already delivered, which is 350,000 more than this time last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Elkeles said the peak of this flu season could be worse than previous winters, adding: \u201cWe really do need people to sit up and listen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cAnd actually, we need to have a big debate probably after this flu season about how we prepare the public better for what happens every year. So if you haven\u2019t already had your flu vaccine and you\u2019re eligible, please go and take it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Young male commuter wearing a face mask at a train station.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/\/1fab9389-cdd1-42cd-9baf-955de5711987.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A \u201cparticularly virulent\u201d strain of flu is taking hold, and masks could help stop it from spreading<\/p>\n<p>MARK LIDDELL\/GETTY IMAGES<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Elkeles added that there was the \u201creally big challenge\u201d of resident doctors \u2014 formerly known as junior doctors \u2014 going on strike next week when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/topic\/nhs\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NHS<\/a> is grappling with flu and other illnesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">He said he agreed with concerns from \u201creally, really senior doctors\u201d at the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges that the five-day walkout could harm patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The academy has made a rare intervention to de-escalate the row between the British Medical Association (BMA) and the government, warning of a \u201cparticularly virulent flu taking hold\u201d. It issued a statement urging the two sides to \u201cend the painful dispute\u201d, and asking doctors to tell their employers if they plan to strike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Officials from the BMA and the government are holding talks, aiming to reach a deal that would avert the strikes, but ministers are adamant they will not increase pay. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cIt\u2019s not too late for resident doctors and the government to find enough common ground in their conversations to say, \u2018We are determined to resolve this dispute but the thing that is really, really going to damage the NHS and harm patients is having the strike next week,\u201d Elkeles said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cSo let\u2019s not have the strike next week and let\u2019s carry on talking and get to a good place where resident doctors and the government feel like there\u2019s a good solution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/healthcare\/article\/junior-doctors-strike-would-cause-mayhem-as-flu-cases-surge-r3nbms3rs\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Junior doctors\u2019 strike \u2018would cause mayhem\u2019 as superflu cases surge<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The UK Health Security Agency has also called on people to get a flu jab. Its data suggests this year\u2019s vaccine is providing good protection, even though a mutated influenza A(H3N2) strain \u2014 dubbed super-flu \u2014 is currently dominating cases in England.<\/p>\n<p>The agency said data suggested that the 2025-26 vaccine is currently 70-75 per cent effective at preventing hospital attendance in children aged two to 17 and 30-40 per cent effective in adults.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The number of people in hospital with flu in England is at a record level for this time of year. An average of 1,717 flu patients were in beds in England each day, including 69 in critical care, the most recent data showed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">That is twice as high as than the equivalent numbers for the same week in 2024, and ten times higher than this time two years ago. Lee Jarvis, the head teacher of St Martin\u2019s School in Caerphilly, South Wales, shut the school on Friday in a \u201cfirebreak\u201d closure because of a \u201csignificant outbreak of flu-like illness\u201d affecting 250 pupils and staff. Congleton High School in Cheshire also shut for three days to carry out a deep clean after a flu outbreak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">A government spokesman said: \u201cThis will be a tough winter for our NHS and the latest figures confirm flu cases are at very high levels this year.
