It is understood that some of these, along with others who have left since September, are now working at the new € 213 million Bon Secours private hospital in the city.

UHL has been under intense pressure for a number of years, with staff struggling to cope with a severe shortage of hospital beds. There were 108 people waiting for a bed in wards and in the emergency department at UHL yesterday – significantly higher than the number in the second most overcrowded hospital, Cork University Hospital, where 80 patients were waiting for a bed.

Pic: File

Sources within the health service say they are braced for further staff departures from UHL. One source told Extra.ie: ‘The new private Bon Secours hospital opened only in September, and a lot of medics have gone there. They’re gone from the public system. They’ve decided to leave the public system, and they will only now be working privately.’

Another person familiar with the issue claimed some senior medics are being asked to cover large geographical areas in community clinics, as well as outpatient and acute medicine wards, and have left their posts as a direct result of the difficult working conditions.

One source said: ‘Conditions need to be changed… staff are facing significant pressure and stress on a daily basis. Everyone knows what the issues are: capacity, waiting lists and the difficulty in keeping staff. They are coming in the door one day and walking out the next.’

Latest figures show there are more than 31,000 patients on waiting lists at the hospital. Commenting on the conditions at the hospital, Sinn Féin health spokesman David Cullinane said there is ‘real fatigue and burnout’ among staff, who are ‘dealing with a very challenging situation on a daily basis’.

The Waterford TD said: ‘If you’re going into that every day and trying to deal with patients on trolleys with no dignity, infection control issues, it’s a nightmare. Staff are having to deal with what must be horrific conditions. It’s almost everything that can possibly go wrong and going against every good practice of healthcare.’

Mr Cullinane said responsibility for the continued failings and capacity shortages at the hospital lies with ‘the HSE and the Government’. Labour Party TD for Tipperary North, Alan Kelly, told Extra.ie that more investment in healthcare in the Midwest region was needed.

Alan Kelly. Pic: Sam Boal / RollingNews.ie

‘I want to see as many medics as possible choose UHL to work in and, while this is concerning, I firmly believe that if this Government and Minister [Jennifer] Carroll MacNeill really want to show their concern for the Mid-west then she will announce investment in a new Model 4 hospital in the region before Christmas,’ he said.

‘It will take years and money but it will show that she is going to end the discrimination that exists against our region for over 20 years when it comes to healthcare.’

The issue of overcrowding is a longstanding one at the hospital and has had knock-on effects on both scheduled and emergency care. An inquest last year into the death of 16-year-old Aoife Johnston at the overcrowded emergency department in 2022 described conditions as being ‘like a death trap’.

Pic: Google

In September, the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) recommended that a new facility or an extension of the existing campus would solve the issues at UHL. Hiqa said the risk to patient safety at the hospital will not be fully solved until the ‘mismatch’ between demand and capacity is tackled.

The region has already had an injection of investment, including plans for 128 new beds to come on stream by the end of this year and a further 96 beds expected to be in place by 2029.

Last month, Minister Carroll MacNeill met with TDs and senators in the Midwest to discuss efforts to tackle chronic overcrowding at the hospital.

Asked about the level of highly qualified staff leaving UHL, a spokeswoman for HSE Mid-West said: ‘Consultants are a highly skilled and highly mobile workforce for whom there is significant demand internationally. People leave roles, including permanent and temporary posts, for a variety of reasons, both personal and professional. Exit interviews are conducted between management and staff to identify and address any patterns and to assist in recruitment and retention.

‘University Hospital Limerick has in recent years seen a significant increase of 55% in consultant staff employed – from 165 (whole-time equivalents) in January 2020 to 256 in October 2025.’

A spokeswoman for the Health Minister did not respond to a request for comment.

The resignation of a number of senior medics from University Hospital Limerick has prompted fears of an exodus…

[34
103,397,396,61,60
0":"post-183946","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-healthcare","8":"tag-health","9":"tag-health-care","10":"tag-healthcare","11":"tag-ie","12":"tag-ireland
["GET
