{"id":18489,"date":"2025-09-13T09:30:06","date_gmt":"2025-09-13T09:30:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/18489\/"},"modified":"2025-09-13T09:30:06","modified_gmt":"2025-09-13T09:30:06","slug":"cork-credit-union-warns-members-their-data-may-reach-dark-web-after-cyber-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/18489\/","title":{"rendered":"Cork Credit Union warns members their data may reach &#8216;dark web&#8217; after cyber attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">Blackpool Credit Union has warned members to be careful of financial scams after a recent cyberattack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A spokesperson from Blackpool Credit Union confirmed to\u00a0 The Echo\u00a0that a forensic investigation identified that records containing the personal information of its members and former members were compromised in the attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The investigation also identified a risk that the information may be disclosed by cyber criminals on the \u2018dark web\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The spokesperson from Blackpool Credit Union said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe very recently became aware that our IT systems were subject to a cyber attack. We immediately engaged external technical and forensic experts to investigate this and to securely restore our systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe reported the incident to the Central Bank of Ireland, the Data Protection Commission and An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na and are co-operating with their enquiries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cOur member funds have not been affected in the attack and access to member accounts remains secure.\u201d The spokesperson added:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cPotentially affected individuals should exercise increased vigilance in relation to \u2018phishing\u2019 emails or SMS messages or any other unsolicited or suspicious communications including any that purport to be by or on behalf of Blackpool Credit Union.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;When in doubt, affected individuals can call us on 021 450 1757 to verify any communication received from us.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;Further tips and guidance on fraud prevention are available at www.fraudsmart.ie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u00a0&#8220;We remain open for business and are contactable by phone and by email or in person by visiting the branch during our usual opening hours.\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"\"> &#8220;We take our data protection responsibilities very seriously and it is a matter of great regret to us that this has happened. We will also be directly contacting affected individuals where necessary following this incident.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u00a0A spokesperson from the Central Bank of Ireland confirmed to\u00a0 The Echo that they had been informed of the cyberattack and that they are engaging with Blackpool Credit Union.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe Central Bank is aware that Blackpool Credit Union is engaging with its members in respect of a cyber attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe Central Bank is continuing to engage with Blackpool Credit Union in relation to the matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIf members have any queries in the first instance, they can call Blackpool Credit Union on 021 450 1757.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u00a0Meanwhile the Data Protection Commission (DPC) also confirmed that they have &#8220;received a breach notification from Blackpool Credit Union and it is currently under assessment.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u00a0Blackpool Credit Union is one of the largest in Cork city, serving around 6,500 members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Cork North Central Sinn F\u00e9in TD Thomas Gould said he was concerned that similar cyber attacks are on the rise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cTo be fair to the Blackpool Credit Union, they are doing everything they can to protect their customers, working with the Central Bank and the Data Protection Commission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cBut we have seen this happening with the HSE, we have seen it happening with other banks and financial institutions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cUnfortunately, we live in a society now where cyber attacks are always a risk and they are on the increase.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Blackpool Credit Union has warned members to be careful of financial scams after a recent cyberattack.
