National Ploughing Association of Ireland (NPAI) assistant managing director Anna Marie McHugh confirmed the \u20ac5 ticket price increase as new accounts show the National Ploughing Association of Ireland recorded post-tax losses of \u20ac150,926 in the 12 months to the end of January 2025.<\/p>\n
The price increase will result in an adult price of \u20ac30 for tickets bought in advance while adult tickets at the gate will be \u20ac35.<\/p>\n
The firm recorded the post-tax loss as revenues decreased by 3pc from \u20ac6.14m to \u20ac5.961m while its costs totalled \u20ac6.679m, showing an operational loss of \u20ac718,000.<\/p>\n
However, the firm’s losses were reduced to \u20ac64,443 after it recorded a \u20ac418,632 gain on its investments and \u20ac234,657 in profit on the disposal of investments.<\/p>\n
A corporation tax charge of \u20ac86,483 resulted in the post-tax loss of \u20ac150,926.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe costs of running the event exceed the profits \u2013 that\u2019s just the reality of things,\u201d said Ms McHugh.<\/p>\n
\u201cFortunately we are a non-profit association and we have been doing OK on our investments so one is balancing out the other,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I would be concerned about the events industry if costs keep escalating at the rate they have been since Covid.\u201d<\/p>\n
A total of 225,000 people attended this year\u2019s event at Screggan, Tullamore. This was an 8pc decrease on the 244,000 which attended the 2024 event at Ratheniska, Co Laois. Screggan will host the 2026 championships.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe NPAI is a National Voluntary Association running probably the biggest event in the country at a cost of over \u20ac7m annually with no government financial support so that\u2019s a pretty significant achievement when you consider that the estimated economic impact of any one National Ploughing Championships is over \u20ac50m,” Ms McHugh said.<\/p>\n
At the end of January this year, the firm was sitting on accumulated funds of \u20ac11.78m while cash funds reduced from \u20ac3.3m to \u20ac1.76m.<\/p>\n
The value of the company\u2019s financial assets increased from \u20ac8.36m to \u20ac9.7m. Numbers employed decreased from 19 to 16.<\/p>\n
