A Co Donegal man is to stand trial on a litany of more than 40 sex charges including rape, sexual assault and the sexual exploitation of a child.<\/p>\n
The man, who is in his 30s, faces a total of 44 charges between August, 2020 and December, 2022.<\/p>\n
He appeared before a special sitting of Letterkenny District Court.<\/p>\n
The accused was accompanied by prison officers as he is already being detained at the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise on other charges.<\/p>\n
He cannot be named because of the nature of the charges against him.<\/p>\n
He is charged with 10 counts of rape, contrary to section 48 of the Offences Against the Person Act, 1861 and section 2 of the Criminal Law (Rape) Act, 1981 as amended by section 21 of the Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act, 1990.<\/p>\n
He also faces 10 counts of rape contrary to section 4 of the Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act, 1990<\/p>\n
He is also charged with 12 counts of sexual assault and 12 counts of sexual exploitation of a child.<\/p>\n
The charges relate to alleged offences on dates between 2020 and 2022 at locations within County Donegal.<\/p>\n
Solicitor for the accused, Ms Catherine Bonner, said she was reserving her position on bail as the accused was in custody on another matter.<\/p>\n
Garda Sergeant Jim Collins said the Director of Public Prosecutions had consented for the accused to be sent forward for trial by indictment at the Central Criminal Court.<\/p>\n
Judge Ciaran Liddy told Ms Bonner that she could apply for legal counsel on the return for trial and adjourned the case for the service of a book of evidence.<\/p>\n
