{"id":187946,"date":"2025-12-12T13:00:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T13:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/187946\/"},"modified":"2025-12-12T13:00:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T13:00:07","slug":"schools-in-waterford-encouraged-to-apply-for-irelands-fittest-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/187946\/","title":{"rendered":"Schools in Waterford encouraged to apply for &#8216;Ireland&#8217;s Fittest&#8217; series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A call from well-known Irish Olympian, David Gillick, has gone out\u00a0to\u00a0schools\u00a0in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterfordlive.ie\/section\/774\/news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">County Waterford<\/a> in a quest\u00a0to\u00a0find &#8216;Ireland\u2019s Fittest School 2026.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David, who was a sprinter,\u00a0has\u00a0teamed up with Fyffes to roll out the programme.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aimed at promoting the importance of exercise, fitness, and healthy eating amongst young people, a central feature of the programme will be a series of exercise routines.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David, alongside Irish fitness trainer, Sharon Flanagan will create the programme, which competing schools can adopt as part of their PE curriculum.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">READ NEXT:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterfordlive.ie\/news\/tramore\/1962296\/permission-granted-to-demolish-old-waterford-hotel-with-redevelopment-planned.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">\u00a0Permission granted to demolish old Waterford hotel with redevelopment planned<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performance will be measured and tracked online.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will run for 8 weeks from January 26th\u00a0and the\u00a0competition will then see the top four schools from each province compete head-to-head across four live regional qualifier events in April.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The top school from Connacht, Leinster, Munster, and Ulster will then progress to May\u2019s grand final, hosted by David and Sharon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The prize package will include \u20ac8,000 worth of sports equipment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Amongst schools nationwide, the level of interest in this competition continues to grow each year.
