{"id":189265,"date":"2025-12-13T06:27:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-13T06:27:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/189265\/"},"modified":"2025-12-13T06:27:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-13T06:27:08","slug":"north-cork-schools-urged-to-keep-irelands-fittest-school-title-in-area-as-applications-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/189265\/","title":{"rendered":"North Cork schools urged to keep Ireland\u2019s Fittest School title in area as applications open"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A call has gone out to schools across the country from former Olympian athlete David Gillick who has joined forces with Fyffes in a quest to find \u2018Ireland\u2019s Fittest School 2026\u2019.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/61ae371b-fc07-4a18-871f-1faaedb6bf4d.jpg\" loading=\"eager\" width=\"100%\" data-testid=\"article-image\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_caption1 indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_secondary indo-66f0fec7_regular indo-1d70522a_marginbottom0 indo-1d70522a_marginleft0 indo-1d70522a_marginright0 indo-1d70522a_margintop3 indo-b48c4984_left\" style=\"color:var(--color-grey-60)\">A call has gone out to schools across the country from former Olympian athlete David Gillick who has joined forces with Fyffes in a quest to find \u2018Ireland\u2019s Fittest School 2026\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom0 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Schools across North Cork are encouraged to compete for the Ireland\u2019s Fittest School title in a bid to keep the accolade in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Last year\u2019s champions, Ballyhass National School fought off stiff competition from across the island in the prestigious event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Irish Olympian sprinter David Gillick has teamed up with Fyffes once again in a quest to find Ireland\u2019s Fittest School 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The premise of the competition is to promote the importance of exercise, fitness and develop healthy eating habits amongst young people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The central feature of the programme will be a series of exercise routines, recorded by Gillick, alongside Irish fitness trainer, Sharon Flanagan \u2013 which competing schools can adopt as part of their PE curriculum and against which performance will be measured and tracked online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The competition will run for eight weeks starting on January 26, and the top four schools from each province will compete in regional qualifiers in April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The top school in Munster, Connacht, Leinster and Ulster will then progress to the grand final in May, with a range of sport equipment worth \u20ac8,000 awarded to the victors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Fyffes Head of Marketing, Emma Hunt-Duffy said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cAmongst schools nationwide, the level of interest in this competition continues to grow each year.
