{"id":189983,"date":"2025-12-13T16:12:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-13T16:12:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/189983\/"},"modified":"2025-12-13T16:12:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-13T16:12:08","slug":"tourists-providing-five-years-of-social-media-before-entering-us-is-unworkable-says-taoiseach-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/189983\/","title":{"rendered":"Tourists providing five years of social media before entering US is \u2018unworkable\u2019, says Taoiseach \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Proposals to ask tourists from dozens of countries including Ireland to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2025\/12\/10\/us-plans-to-start-checking-tourists-social-media-over-last-five-years\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2025\/12\/10\/us-plans-to-start-checking-tourists-social-media-over-last-five-years\/\">provide five years of social media history<\/a> as a condition of entry to the US are \u201cnot workable\u201d and would lead to \u201clog jams everywhere\u201d, Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin has said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The new conditions would affect people eligible to visit the US for 90 days without a visa. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Martin has described US president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> as a \u201csensible guy\u201d who \u201clikes to get things done in an accelerated way\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe does not believe in over-bureaucratising things. It is an important one so we would not like to see anything which would hinder travel between both countries and the peoples of both countries. I think it (the proposal) is not workable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Martin said every effort will be made to \u201cconsult and engage\u201d with the US authorities in relation to the matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cFive years for some people is an awful lot of social media. Pity the person who has to look through it all,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe (Mr Trump) likes to get things done in an accelerated way. In that context, I don\u2019t see why five years of social media [is required]. It seems to me you would have log jams everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The new mandatory disclosures would apply to 42 countries whose nationals are currently permitted to enter the US without a visa, as long as they have filled out an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (Esta) form.
