Source: Casper Avenant, DBCA<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Vision shared with Yahoo News further highlights the incredible power of one of these crocodiles as it uses its massive jaws to kill a turtle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Subsequent footage shows it being eaten on the beach, and with the sound on, you can hear its shell being punctured.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers dropped into crocodile territory<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Venturing into this ancient ecosystem is fraught with danger, and one of the few people to have witnessed this incredible crocodile behaviour is DBCA\u2019s principal research scientist Dr Scott Whiting, who has been studying the animals for over 30 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThey have different strategies; they&#8217;ll either sit and wait in the water for the turtles to come down, or they&#8217;ll walk up the beach and attack them on the nest,\u201d he told Yahoo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Because mature turtles return to the same nesting grounds they were born in every season, over generations crocodiles have learned to regard them as a food source.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Most of the attacks occur in the early morning, sometimes they\u2019re actually observed, but most times scientists only see the aftermath \u2014 an empty shell, flippers, and guts on the sand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Whiting wasn&#8217;t directly involved in the recently published DBCA research, but he has witnessed encounters between the two species at Cape Dommett as well as the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/another-aussie-animal-gets-trapped-in-beer-can-as-bins-overflow-prompting-calls-for-change-071459178.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Tiwi Islands.;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tiwi Islands.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cYou\u2019re usually dropped off for one or two weeks \u2014 you just have your food and your camp \u2014 and there\u2019s a rawness to seeing the huge size of a crocodile and what it can do to a 90kg hard-shell animal,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe haven\u2019t got that hard shell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shock discovery after sleeping in crocodile territory<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/tourists-flee-water-in-byron-bay-as-incredible-natural-event-busts-aussie-ocean-myth-064613026.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:doesn\u2019t worry as much about sharks;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">doesn\u2019t worry as much about sharks<\/a>, because you can avoid them by stepping out of the ocean, but when it comes to crocodiles, there are few places that are safe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On one occasion, his team woke up to find large tracks between their two tents, that headed all the way down to the water.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"A human foot next to a crocodile foot on the sand.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1440\" height=\"960\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-none lg:rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/0d62e500-d56a-11f0-bfce-65c5349d0e86.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A picture taken on the Tiwi Islands show Dr Scott Whiting\u2019s footprint next to that crocodile. Source: Scott Whiting<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">No one had heard anything in the night, but the next morning they moved the tents further from the water, and constructed a make-shift fence around their camp, with bells, cans, and rocks attached to it to sound the alarm if the crocodile returned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Although the animals can travel hundreds of metres over land, what gives Whiting comfort in these remote locations is the abundance of food, making it less likely they\u2019ll attack a human.<\/p>\n<p>Why crocodiles don&#8217;t need to be culled<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Saltwater crocodile numbers have increased in recent years, and they are now more conspicuous in the wild.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But just 50 years ago the species was in serious trouble \u2014 numbers plummeted <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/plan-to-kill-1200-crocodiles-a-year-as-government-refuses-to-rule-out-trophy-hunting-015749337.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:due to unregulated hunting;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">due to unregulated hunting <\/a>between 1945 and 1970, and around 300,000 were shot across the Northern Territory and Western Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Saltwater crocodile eating a turtle<\/p>\n<p>1 of 5<\/p>\n<p>A crocodile eating a turtle off the Tiwi Islands. Source: Scott Whiting<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Cape Dommett research has found the rebound in numbers has led to one mature turtle being killed by a large dominant crocodile every week over the three-month nesting period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Hatchlings are being regularly eaten by juveniles, as incredible infrared footage taken at night highlights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Although flatback turtles are federally listed as vulnerable to extinction, Whiting does not think culling crocodiles is the answer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cCrocodiles are territorial, so it\u2019s not like we\u2019ll end up with 400 of them on the beach because there is food,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThere are dominant animals, so they keep things regulated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wild environment unchanged for hundreds of years<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Most turtles are caught on the sand, taken to the water\u2019s edge, where they\u2019re drowned, and then brought back to land before their shells are crushed and their flesh is eaten.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Reptiles have a slow metabolic rate and can survive for an extended period after heavy blood loss, meaning death at the jaws of a crocodile can be slow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cGenerally, the flippers will be taken off, and there will be puncture wounds in the shell, but the turtle can still be alive,\u201d Whiting said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cSome of them are quick, minutes, and some of them are a long time, maybe hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While this may seem unpalatable to those who live in environments removed from nature, this predator\/prey relationship evolved millennia ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sketches made 200 years ago by early explorers show many of the remote areas the DBCA teams visit are largely unchanged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe same boab trees are there, the bays look the same,\u201d Whiting said.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Left: Puncture marks from crocodile teeth in a turtle shell.
