Jessie Buckley received a Golden Globe nomination for her role in ‘Hamnet’<\/p>\n
Stars Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley walked the red carpet at Dublin\u2019s Lighthouse Cinema for the premiere of the much-anticipated film Hamnet.<\/p>\n
They appeared on the red carpet alongside director and co-screenwriter Chlo\u00e9 Zhao and author Maggie O\u2019Farrell, who adapted her own award-winning novel for the screen.<\/p>\n
Amid speculation that the Irish stars could get the nod for an Oscar in February, both Buckley and Mescal have already received Golden Globe nominations for their performances in Hamnet.<\/p>\n
Buckley (35) from Killarney, has been shortlisted for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama), and Mescal, who hails from Maynooth, is nominated for Best Supporting Actor.<\/p>\n
The film, which reimagines the life of William Shakespeare and his family, will be released in Irish cinemas on January 9.<\/p>\n

It follows William Shakespeare portrayed by Mescal, his wife Agnes, played by Buckley, and the untimely death of their only son, Hamnet, during the bubonic plague in 1596.<\/p>\n
Buckley portrays a grieving mother in the aftermath of her son\u2019s death, while her husband retreats into his work, writing what would go on to be called Hamlet in the years following the death.<\/p>\n

The role took on a new meaning for Buckley specifically, who since the filming of the film has welcomed her first child with her husband. \u201cWhen I was filming Hamnet, I deeply wanted to become a mother,\u201d Buckley told The New York Times in recent days. \u201cAnd it was such a gift to move through this woman and her motherhood and her love and her loss before I became a mother myself.\u201d<\/p>\n
The film has earned just over $4m (\u20ac3.4m) in the US since its late-November release.<\/p>\n
Hamnet is already shaping up as a Best Picture frontrunner alongside One Battle After Another and Sinners, a position cemented on Monday with six Golden Globe nominations.
