It said liaison inspectors have been appointed to ensure the force continues its ongoing engagement with the Jewish community \u201cto provide them with reassurance and support\u201d.<\/p>\n
[\u00a0\u2018The streets are empty, everyone is staying at home\u2019 – Irish living in Sydney shocked by Bondi shootingsOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly<\/a> met the Chief Rabbi of Ireland, Yoni Wieder, on Sunday to discuss the measures.<\/p>\n It comes as major cities, including Berlin, London and New York, plan to increase security around Hanukkah events following the attack.<\/p>\n Minister for Justice Jim O\u2019Callaghan<\/a> said he spoke to the Garda Commissioner on Sunday evening \u201cabout ensuring there is adequate protection for the Jewish community in Ireland\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cIn fact, I spoke to him many months ago about ensuring that such protection was in place for the Jewish community. The commissioner has assured me and the Chief Rabbi of his commitment to the safety of the Jewish community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n He added he wished to reassure the Jewish community \u201cof our support in the aftermath of the appalling terrorist attack in Sydney\u201d.<\/p>\n Speaking to The Irish Times on the planned increased Garda presence, Maurice Cohen, chair of the Jewish Representative Council of Ireland, said major attacks internationally \u201care almost always unforewarned\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cFor this reason we have repeatedly called on the Government to meet its obligations and work with us to define a clear national strategy for combating anti-Semitism and fostering Jewish life,\u201d he said, which would include increased security for Jewish places of worship, schools and community gatherings.<\/p>\n \u201cNo community should have to live in fear that ordinary places of life and leisure can become scenes of terror,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n He added violence and terror of this nature \u201cdoes not arise in a vacuum\u201d and called on leaders to \u201cexamine their words and their actions\u201d.<\/p>\n Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee said her department was \u201cnot aware\u201d of any Irish citizens directly affected by the \u201cappalling anti-Semitic attack\u201d, while Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin<\/a> described it as an \u201cevil act\u201d.<\/p>\n He added it was a \u201cfurther manifestation of the murderous hate spawned by anti-Semitism\u201d.<\/p>\n Video footage shows scores of people running away from the beach, while one eyewitness described \u201clots of bodies on the floor\u201d, saying the event was \u201cfull of grandparents and grandchildren\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was pretty terrifying,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n A man believed to be one of the gunmen is in police custody in a \u201ccritical condition\u201d while another alleged gunman had died, police said.<\/p>\n A bomb-disposal unit also responded after \u201cimprovised explosive devices\u201d were found in a car linked to one of the gunmen.<\/p>\n
