The 78-year-old, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his victim, appeared at Wicklow Circuit Criminal Court for the finalisation of his sentencing.<\/p>\n
The accused was charged with a total of 53 offences in relation to sexually assaulting his granddaughter.<\/p>\n
The accused had previously appeared in November for sentencing, but Judge Patrick Quinn adjourned the matter to allow time to finalise the decision.<\/p>\n
At a previous sitting of Wicklow Circuit Criminal Court, the court was told that in September 2024, garda\u00ed became aware of the allegations following a dispute at the defendant\u2019s home, where he lived with the victim and her mother.<\/p>\n
The dispute centred on a love bite on the victim\u2019s neck. The victim, who was a teenager at the time, remarked that the defendant was \u201cjust jealous that he hadn\u2019t been the one to give her the love bite\u201d.<\/p>\n
The court also heard that the victim\u2019s mother contacted garda\u00ed to report the abuse after her daughter disclosed what had happened.<\/p>\n
In her interview, the victim said the abuse began when she was 11 years old and that the defendant abused her four to five times a week.<\/p>\n
Detective Garda Stephanie Hallahan told the court in November 2025 the defendant had said he was \u201cin a relationship to a certain extent\u201d with his granddaughter. The defendant had been providing childcare for his daughter.<\/p>\n
During sentencing, Judge Quinn revisited the details of the original hearing, remarking on the defendant\u2019s relationship with his granddaughter, whom his daughter had fostered along with another young girl.<\/p>\n
The judge said he recalled the victim impact statement given by the defendant\u2019s daughter, referring to one line from it: \u201cWe were a small, loving and sometimes chaotic family, but we were a real family.\u201d<\/p>\n
The court heard that the damage caused was profound and that the long-term impact on the family remains uncertain.<\/p>\n
Judge Quinn noted the \u201cdeep shame\u201d that the defendant now faces in going to prison after what had otherwise been a \u201cdecent life,\u201d including a distinguished career in the civil service and raising his children after losing his wife at a young age.<\/p>\n
The defendant\u2019s offending was considered to be on the lower end of the upper scale.<\/p>\n
Judge Quinn acknowledged that he cooperated with garda\u00ed, including returning from mainland Europe for questioning.<\/p>\n
Judge Quinn imposed a sentence of six years imprisonment, with the final 18 months suspended for a period of 18 months.<\/p>\n
