Of those, 145 are venomous, composing about 65% of the country’s snake population.

This isn’t even counting all of the other venomous animals that can be found on the island, such as jellyfish, ants, and spiders.

For the real dangers of many of these animals, Australians are often surprisingly calm while dealing with them. Many internet users learned this firsthand after seeing a recent TikTok video series by user @ourcow.

What’s So Dangerous About This Snake?

In a video with over 9 million views, the TikTokers say that they “currently have got Australia’s biggest … brown snake in our bathroom.”

“This snake is, what, 6 foot? 7 foot? And it is—it is a man killer,” one of the TikTokers, Bianca, states.

She’s not exaggerating. The Eastern Brown Snake is widely regarded as one of the most venomous snakes in the world.

“I’ve got a few tools here and a few tools over there that I’ll keep off camera, and we’ll get this big mother out of our house,” she continues. “Like, we’re both wearing gumboots and jeans, ‘cause if this snake bit you, you would actually die. Straight up.”

Making things more precarious is the pair’s distance from the nearest hospital. Given that they’re in the outback, Bianca says that they’re at least “100 [kilometers] from town,” or over 60 miles.

What Happened Next?

While the snake appeared to be leaving on its own, it got stuck in the door. Finally, the pair was able to encourage the snake out of their abode.

“It was very stressful,” she says. “It was up against the window. And it wouldn’t go anywhere. It was just going up the window.”

She continues by noting that she didn’t know how it got into their house in the first place. The TikToker speculates that someone could have left a door open. Regardless, she marveled at the snake’s size, which she estimated at 7 feet.

“Part of living in the bush, I suppose,” Bianca concludes.

Was This Really The World’s Biggest Brown Snake?

The Australian Museum says that Eastern Brown Snakes are, on average, around 1.5 meters, or about 5 feet, in length.

The longest specimen on record is 6 feet, 7.25 inches long. If the TikToker’s snake was truly 7 feet in length, it would be the longest recorded specimen. That said, as measuring the snake wasn’t exactly a priority in that moment, the true size of the snake could not be confirmed.

No matter how long the snake was, the TikToker was right to avoid it. Proper education means that snake deaths in Australia are incredibly rare, with only two or three fatalities per year owing to a lack of medical intervention.

Eastern Brown Snakes are particularly dangerous for several reasons. First, as noted by ABC News, their short fangs mean that, if one is bitten, they might not be able to locate the exact bite site—if they even realize they were bitten at all.

For the first 15 minutes or so, the victim will feel fine. After that, the onset is rapid, with many victims dying within the half hour.

ABC News advises that, if one is bitten, they should be rushed to treatment. That said, they also note that the best form of protection from one of these bites is staying calm, knowing first aid, not approaching the snake, and calling an expert to remove it.

Commenters Are Terrified

In the comments section, users shared their horror about Bianca’s situation.

“I don’t think it was intended for ppl to ever live in Australia,” wrote a user.

“that house belongs to the snake now, time to move,” declared another.

“All of a sudden I don’t mind shovelling snow today,” joked a third.

“I love Australia from a distance,” added a further TikToker.

We’ve reached out to the TikTokers via website contact form and Instagram DM.

Via iStockphoto / @ourcow TikTok Australia has a reputation for dangerous animals—and for good reason.
