{"id":195737,"date":"2025-12-17T02:47:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T02:47:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/195737\/"},"modified":"2025-12-17T02:47:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T02:47:07","slug":"martin-heavily-criticised-over-review-into-gavin-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/195737\/","title":{"rendered":"Martin heavily criticised over review into Gavin campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Fianna F\u00e1il leader Miche\u00e1l Martin&#8217;s handling of the selection of its presidential candidate Jim Gavin was heavily criticised at a party meeting in Leinster House last night which lasted for almost five hours.<\/p>\n<p>Several TDs and Senators expressed frustration at the process and accused Mr Martin of sidelining the parliamentary party.<\/p>\n<p>This meeting was at certain moments a tetchy and even nasty affair, as the party met to consider the review of its botched presidential campaign.<\/p>\n<p>There was shock expressed that Mr Gavin was nominated without any polling data and the fact that the party leader&#8217;s imprimatur was given after he had just a single meeting with Mr Gavin.<\/p>\n<p>A revelation by the Irish Independent of a historic dispute with a tenant ultimately derailed Mr Gavin&#8217;s campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The report found that Mr Gavin was asked five times about a reference to a dispute with a tenant, including twice before he was selected, according to the party&#8217;s review into the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>He was asked about the dispute on 5 September and on 8 September.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Gavin did not participate in the compilation of the report and declined to be interviewed.<\/p>\n<p>Report findings<\/p>\n<p>The report says that on 5 September, Chief Of Staff at Department of the Taoiseach, Deirdre Gillane received a call from journalist at the Irish Independent Fionn\u00e1n Sheahan.<\/p>\n<p>He said that there may be an issue with a tenant.<\/p>\n<p>The matter was put to Mr Gavin by General Secretary Sean Dorgan and Mr Gavin states that he is not aware of any such issue.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Fianna F\u00e1il Presidential candidate Jim Gavin speaking to the media\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/00232caa-614.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nMr Gavin did not participate in the compilation of the report and declined to be interviewed.<\/p>\n<p>Nominations for consideration as Fianna F\u00e1il&#8217;s presidential election candidate closed at 5pm that day.<\/p>\n<p>Then on 8 September, Mr Sheahan sent an email to Fianna F\u00e1il saying: &#8220;Following on from the request for an interview, would you mind letting me know when Jim Gavin will be responding to media queries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The email continued: &#8220;I have some specific questions I wish to put to him about property interests and a particular issue arising with a tenant when he was a landlord.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Dorgan put the matter to Mr Gavin again.<\/p>\n<p>Then Fianna F\u00e1il TD John Lahart sent a text message to Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers referencing a potential issue with a tenant, who was a journalist, and the return of a deposit.<\/p>\n<p>This text was sent to Mr Dorgan who again put it to Mr Gavin.<\/p>\n<p>To both of these queries Mr Gavin professed no recollection of any such issues, of a deposit not having been returned.<\/p>\n<p>Expected cost of campaign is over \u20ac350,000<\/p>\n<p>The report says the expected cost of the campaign is \u20ac350,000 to \u20ac400,000. As Mr Gavin&#8217;s vote did not reach the required threshold, the party will not be able to recoup some of these costs.<\/p>\n<p>The review found that Mr Gavin was first mentioned as a candidate in the week of 9 June, when former Dublin footballer Keith Barr contacted Mr Chambers, recommending Mr Gavin as a candidate for Fianna F\u00e1il.<\/p>\n<p>This was followed by a text dated 15 June from Mr Gavin himself to Mr Chambers seeking to follow up on the initial contact.<\/p>\n<p>Due diligence on the candidate was carried out by Fianna F\u00e1il general secretary Se\u00e1n Dorgan, advisor Peter Dorgan and Assistant General Secretary Darragh McShea.<\/p>\n<p>The report says they believed the process was &#8220;exhaustive&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Micheal Martin speaks to reporters \" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/0023a260-614.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nSeveral TDs and Senators accused Mr Martin of sidelining the parliamentary party<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This included providing a warning regarding the intense scrutiny and media attention that would be applied to a candidate, and the consequential need to brief the party on all relevant matters at an early stage,&#8221; it says.<\/p>\n<p>Due diligence was done by research, the examination of public documents, media articles and several meetings with Mr Gavin, it says.<\/p>\n<p>During the course of the process, a variety of questions on Mr Gavin&#8217;s position as a landlord and a variety of matters that might arise as a result were raised.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was stated that any disgruntled tenant would almost certainly raise their grievance publicly,&#8221; it says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mr Gavin did not recall any potential issues when the topic was addressed even in the light of Deputy Lahart&#8217;s and Mr Sheahan\u2019s communications and nothing further was done.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>25-page report<\/p>\n<p>The report was published and emailed to members of the parliamentary party at 6pm yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>It runs to 25 pages, has chapters on the process by which it was decided to run a presidential candidate, the steps taken during the identification and selection process, the extent of the due diligence carried out, and the basis for the identification and selection of a candidate.<\/p>\n<p>It also has a chapter on potential changes to the procedure for selecting candidates for future presidential elections.<\/p>\n<p>The review was established to consider the steps taken during the identification and selection process of Jim Gavin as Fianna F\u00e1il&#8217;s presidential nomination, and examined the basis on which he was selected as a candidate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Fianna F\u00e1il leader Miche\u00e1l Martin&#8217;s handling of the selection of its presidential candidate Jim Gavin was heavily&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":193967,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[42,43,40,38,41,39],"class_list":{"0":"post-195737","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-headlines","8":"tag-headlines","9":"tag-news","10":"tag-top-news","11":"tag-top-stories","12":"tag-topnews","13":"tag-topstories"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/195737","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=195737"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/195737\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/193967"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=195737"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=195737"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=195737"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
