{"id":197124,"date":"2025-12-17T20:34:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T20:34:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/197124\/"},"modified":"2025-12-17T20:34:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T20:34:08","slug":"camera-on-nasa-mars-probe-snaps-its-100000th-photo-of-the-red-planet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/197124\/","title":{"rendered":"Camera on NASA Mars probe snaps its 100,000th photo of the Red Planet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"ec0a603d-e2cc-49e6-a48f-7cc4c653a00c\">NASA&#8217;s sharp-eyed Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) just notched a big milestone.<\/p>\n<p>MRO&#8217;s HiRISE (&#8220;High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment&#8221;) camera has now snapped 100,000 photos of the surface of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a>, NASA announced on Tuesday (Dec. 16).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"ec0a603d-e2cc-49e6-a48f-7cc4c653a00c-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Image number 100,000, which was captured on Oct. 7, &#8220;shows mesas and dunes within Syrtis Major, a region about 50 miles (80 kilometers) southeast of Jezero Crater, which NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/perseverance-rover-mars-2020-mission\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/perseverance-rover-mars-2020-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Perseverance<\/a> rover is exploring,&#8221; NASA officials said in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/one-of-nasas-key-cameras-orbiting-mars-takes-100000th-image\/?utm_source=iContact&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=1-nasajpl&amp;utm_content=media-mro20251216\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/one-of-nasas-key-cameras-orbiting-mars-takes-100000th-image\/?utm_source=iContact&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=1-nasajpl&amp;utm_content=media-mro20251216\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"c98590c4-c8f3-4960-93f7-a5162a19633c\">&#8220;Scientists are analyzing the image to better understand the source of windblown sand that gets trapped in the region\u2019s landscape, eventually forming dunes,&#8221; they added.<\/p>\n<p>MRO arrived in orbit around Mars in March 2006, tasked with searching for signs of past <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17048-water-on-mars.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17048-water-on-mars.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">water activity on the Red Planet<\/a> and conducting a variety of other investigations.<\/p>\n<p>HiRISE \u2014 which is capable of resolving features as small as a coffee table on the Martian surface \u2014 has been key to that wide-ranging mission.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;HiRISE is the instrument the mission relies on for high-resolution images of features ranging from impact craters, sand dunes, and ice deposits to potential landing sites,&#8221; NASA officials said in the statement. &#8220;Those images, in turn, help improve our understanding of Mars and prepare for NASA\u2019s future human missions there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p id=\"739028b6-2a95-4722-8e57-a80b0c7ebfe6\">Though MRO has been operating at Mars for more than 20 years, it&#8217;s not the longest-lived NASA Red Planet orbiter. That distinction goes to Mars Odyssey, which has been studying the planet from above since October 2001.<\/p>\n<p>MRO and Odyssey are two of nine spacecraft actively studying Mars up close. The others are NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17963-mars-curiosity.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17963-mars-curiosity.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Curiosity<\/a> and Perseverance rovers and five other orbiters: NASA&#8217;s MAVEN, Europe&#8217;s Mars Express and ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, China&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/tianwen-1.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/tianwen-1.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tianwen 1<\/a> and the United Arab Emirates&#8217; Hope mission.<\/p>\n<p>MAVEN may be in trouble, however: It has been <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/nasas-maven-spacecraft-is-still-silent-at-mars-and-apparently-is-spinning-too\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/nasas-maven-spacecraft-is-still-silent-at-mars-and-apparently-is-spinning-too\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">silent since Dec. 4<\/a> and has apparently begun spinning in an unexpected way.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"NASA&#8217;s sharp-eyed Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) just notched a big milestone.
