(Image credit: Rocket Lab)<\/p>\n<p id=\"0a80d1c7-37c6-4b89-ab76-d6468b71cfd0\">The upcoming launch, which Rocket Lab calls &#8220;Don&#8217;t Be Such a Square,&#8221; will kick off the Space Test Program (STP)-S30 mission for the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/us-space-force-history-mission-capabilities\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/us-space-force-history-mission-capabilities\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Space Force<\/a>&#8216;s Space Systems Command.<\/p>\n<p>STP-30 will deploy and operate the first-ever DiskSats, a new type of spacecraft developed by The Aerospace Corporation with funding help from NASA. (Image credit: The Aerospace Corporation)<\/p>\n<p id=\"dd0a7fb4-e691-438a-9aec-5e4c36bda04a\">That odd shape could lead to greater performance in the final frontier for small satellites, which have traditionally employed the boxy &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34324-cubesats.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34324-cubesats.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cubesat<\/a>&#8221; form factor.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"dd0a7fb4-e691-438a-9aec-5e4c36bda04a-1\">DiskSats &#8220;could offer more power and surface area for instruments, providing more opportunities for NASA to expand upon target mission objectives for small spacecraft,&#8221; agency officials wrote in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/smallspacecraft\/disksat\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/smallspacecraft\/disksat\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">description of the new tech<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With its ability to fly continuously with one face pointing at the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>, the DiskSat can also have a very low drag, making them capable of very-low altitude missions (less than 300 kilometers or 185 miles) such as those necessary for some Earth-observation missions,&#8221; NASA added.<\/p>\n<p>The DiskSats won&#8217;t be flying so low on their inaugural mission, however. (Image credit: Rocket Lab)<\/p>\n<p id=\"7547680c-7c27-4277-900b-b184e7929849\">Rocket Lab initially planned to launch &#8220;Don&#8217;t Be Such a Square&#8221; in April 2026 but expedited it at the Space Force&#8217;s request, the company said in an emailed statement.<\/p>\n<p>The mission will be Rocket Lab&#8217;s 20th of 2025, extending the company&#8217;s single-year launch record. The previous high was 16, set in 2024. Most of these have been orbital flights of the 59-foot-tall (18 meters) Electron, which gives small satellites dedicated rides to Earth orbit.
