This is an impressive result for a genre piece that, though from a respected film-maker, did not, at the start of the year, look like the kind of project that wins awards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe were definitely hoping for it to do well,\u201d Coogler, who is also the director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/creed-review-a-fresh-glint-in-the-eye-of-the-tiger-1.2496661\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/creed-review-a-fresh-glint-in-the-eye-of-the-tiger-1.2496661\">Creed<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/black-panther-this-film-is-revolutionary-just-not-that-good-1.3382359\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/black-panther-this-film-is-revolutionary-just-not-that-good-1.3382359\">Black Panther<\/a>, told The Irish Times in November. \u201cThere were a lot of calculated risks that we took on this movie. We bet on ourselves.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/michael-b-jordan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/michael-b-jordan\/\">Michael B Jordan<\/a>, who took the best-actor prize from the Dublin critics, plays African-American twins who set up a speakeasy in 1930s Mississippi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Already the recipient of seven nominations at the Golden Globes, Sinners is expected to score similarly well at the upcoming Oscar nominations, but it will face fierce competition from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/paul-thomas-anderson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/paul-thomas-anderson\/\">Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2025\/09\/24\/one-battle-after-another-review-dicaprio-and-penn-face-off-in-andersons-thrilling-epic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2025\/09\/24\/one-battle-after-another-review-dicaprio-and-penn-face-off-in-andersons-thrilling-epic\/\">One Battle After Another<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">That huge political comedy has scored best-film wins from New York Film Critics Circle, Los Angeles Film Critics Association and Boston Society of Film Critics. In Dublin it had to settle for second place in best film, best screenplay, best director and, for Leonardo DiCaprio, best actor. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/emma-stone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/emma-stone\/\">Emma Stone<\/a> took best actress for her turn in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/yorgos-lanthimos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/yorgos-lanthimos\/\">Yorgos Lanthimos\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2025\/10\/31\/bugonia-review-mid-ranking-yorgosia-that-just-about-justifies-its-many-indulgences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2025\/10\/31\/bugonia-review-mid-ranking-yorgosia-that-just-about-justifies-its-many-indulgences\/\">Bugonia<\/a>, produced by the Dublin-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/element-pictures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/element-pictures\/\">Element Pictures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The big winners among Irish productions were Sin\u00e9ad O\u2019Shea\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2025\/01\/30\/blue-road-the-edna-obrien-story-review-was-ireland-this-dire-it-really-was\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2025\/01\/30\/blue-road-the-edna-obrien-story-review-was-ireland-this-dire-it-really-was\/\">Blue Road: The Edna O\u2019Brien Story<\/a> and Brendan Canty\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2025\/08\/28\/christy-clattering-noisy-joyful-portrait-of-life-in-a-troubled-north-cork-suburb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2025\/08\/28\/christy-clattering-noisy-joyful-portrait-of-life-in-a-troubled-north-cork-suburb\/\">Christy<\/a>. O\u2019Shea\u2019s film has, since a premiere at Toronto International Film Festival in late 2024, been picking up plaudits around the world. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It won best overall documentary from the DFCC and was runner-up to Canty\u2019s lively social-realist picture in best Irish film. O\u2019Shea\u2019s study of a much-loved Irish writer was a sizeable hit on its Irish release in 2025.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Christy by Brendan Canty\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/UISAOBFZWNDKVOVXFKUWTYVUYE.jpg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Christy by Brendan Canty <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Canty, a Cork film-maker previously best known for the music video for Hozier\u2019s Take Me to Church, took the award for best Irish breakthrough. Eva Victor, director of the singular serious comedy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2025\/08\/21\/sorry-baby-review-eva-victors-near-perfect-debut-is-clever-warm-and-original\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2025\/08\/21\/sorry-baby-review-eva-victors-near-perfect-debut-is-clever-warm-and-original\/\">Sorry, Baby<\/a>, secured the gong for best international breakthrough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">DFCC paid tribute to their former member Philip Molloy, who died in June. The Wexford-born critic and journalist was a regular voter in the group\u2019s polls. \u201cHe was truthful. Winners of best film in previous years have included An Cail\u00edn Ci\u00fain, The Power of the Dog, Brokeback Mountain and The Zone of Interest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The poll lands as the international awards season kicks into busy pre-Christmas gear. Earlier this week the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the shortlists \u2013 perhaps better called longlists \u2013 in 12 categories, ahead of the Oscar nominations being announced on January 22nd. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Two Irish films have been named among the 15 listed for best animated short. Giovanna Ferrari\u2019s \u00c9iru, from Kilkenny\u2019s unstoppable Cartoon Saloon, follows a child as he descends into a mysteriously emptied well. John Kelly\u2019s Retirement Plan features Domhnall Gleeson\u2019s voice in the tale of a man looking forward to a quiet life after work.
