{"id":199453,"date":"2025-12-19T03:24:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-19T03:24:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/199453\/"},"modified":"2025-12-19T03:24:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-19T03:24:08","slug":"rory-mcilroy-wins-bbc-sports-personality-of-the-year-for-the-first-time-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/199453\/","title":{"rendered":"Rory McIlroy wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year for the first time \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rory-mcilroy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rory-mcilroy\/\">Rory McIlroy<\/a> has won BBC Sports Personality of the Year for the first time after a career-defining year that saw him complete the career Grand Slam by winning the Masters and help Europe win the Ryder Cup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The 36-year-old won at Augusta in April, beating Englishman Justin Rose in a playoff to complete the career grand slam of golf\u2019s four major titles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He then contributed three-and-a-half points to Europe\u2019s tally as they beat the United States to win the Ryder Cup in New York, their first away victory over the US in 13 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">McIlroy won the public vote for the BBC prize ahead of England\u2019s Rugby World Cup-winning star Ellie Kildunne and new Formula One world champion Lando Norris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">England footballers Chloe Kelly and Hannah Hampton, and darts world champion Luke Littler were the other three shortlisted stars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">His success makes him the first golfer to win the award since Nick Faldo in 1989 \u2013 the year McIlroy was born. McIlroy becomes the fourth Irish winner after Mary Peters, Barry McGuigan and Tony McCoy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He came close to winning it in 2014, losing out to Hamilton despite winning the Open and the PGA Championship that year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">McIlroy, who flew in from the Golf Channel Games event in Florida to attend the ceremony in Salford, also won a seventh Race to Dubai title this year, leaving him one behind Colin Montgomerie\u2019s record, and won several tournaments including the Players Championship and the Irish Open at The K Club.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201c2025 has been the year that I made my dreams come true,\u201d he said on stage. \u201cFrom Augusta to the Ryder Cup and everything else in between, it really has been the year that dreams are made of.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI\u2019ve a lot of people to thank. Firstly, the public, thank you for voting me as your Sports Personality of the Year, but my family, my mum and dad, they sacrificed so much for me and I obviously wouldn\u2019t be here without them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMy wife, Erica, my daughter, Poppy, they\u2019re what holds me together, my rock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThey couldn\u2019t be here tonight, they\u2019re back in America, but I can\u2019t wait to get back to see them tomorrow and celebrate this with them as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSo thank you for all your support, everything that you\u2019ve done for me over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood after receiving the award for Team of the Year. Home videos of a three-year-old McIlroy practising in his living room captured a precocious talent, as well as a television appearance aged nine when he chipped balls into a washing machine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He shot a course record 61 at Royal Portrush aged 16 and came to wider prominence with the only bogey-free round in an opening 68 at the 2007 Open at Carnoustie, before winning his first major at the 2011 US Open.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">McIlroy and his Ryder Cup colleagues also secured the Team of the Year prize.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">David Stancombe and Sergio Aguiar, the fathers of Elsie Dot Stancombe and Alice Aguiar who were murdered at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport in the summer of 2024, were recognised with the Helen Rollason Award for their fundraising efforts at the London Marathon in April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The money raised contributed to projects set up in the memory of their daughters and Bebe King, who was also killed in the attack.
