The unprecedented opportunity came together after encounter between Benthaus and Hans Koenigsmann, a former executive at SpaceX \u2014 Blue Origin\u2019s chief competitor.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif000e3b6p66dygq4y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Koenigsmann, like Benthaus, is German, and the two of them were chatting during an event in Munich last year when Benthaus wondered aloud if she would ever be able to realize her dream of spaceflight in spite of a spinal cord injury that had left her unable to walk.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif000f3b6pydlty7m5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Koenigsmann then began quietly conspiring to make it happen.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif000g3b6pi9u9tlm9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cShe said she was only thinking about a suborbital flight,\u201d Koenigsmann told CNN on Monday. While SpaceX offers multimillion-dollar rides to Earth orbit, Blue Origin offers brief trips to suborbital space, so Koenigsmann called up his former competitor. \u201cThey responded really, really well to us,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif000h3b6plpvu08ri@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Koenigsmann and Benthaus will fly as a team, alongside four other passengers, aboard Blue Origin\u2019s New Shepard rocket. Similar flights have so far carried more than 80 people, including Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos, singer Katy Perry and famed \u201cStar Trek\u201d actor William Shatner, on 10-minute trips to the edge of space \u2014 traveling high enough to surpass the K\u00e1rm\u00e1n Line, which is a common demarcation line for space that lies 100 kilometers (62 miles) above sea level.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif000i3b6pm09chci8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen Hans told me, \u2018Blue is excited about this,\u2019 I was like, \u2018Are you sure? Are you sure you understood them correctly?\u2019\u201d Benthaus told CNN Tuesday. \u201cI always wanted to go to space, but I never really considered it something which I could actually do.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif000j3b6pmlxbaqjf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The crew was set to launch as soon as Thursday from Blue Origin\u2019s facilities near the remote town of Van Horn, Texas. But the company opted to stand down from the launch attempt because of an \u201cissue with built-in checks.\u201d Blue Origin did not provide further details about the issue, nor has it confirmed when it will make another flight attempt.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif000k3b6p8f2rxcqv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During the brief, suborbital flight, Koenigsmann will serve as Benthaus\u2019 companion \u2014 ready to step in to assist her if the need arises.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif000l3b6pqs26ow5v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Benthaus expects to be able to carry out many flight operations herself. She can enter and exit the 15-foot-wide New Shepard capsule on her own, using a small bench.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif000m3b6ptoefk65t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Benthaus also said she plans to use a strap to keep her legs bound together \u2014 preventing them from splaying wildly as passengers exit their seats to briefly float in weightlessness at the top of the flight path. (Blue Origin flights typically offer passengers three or four minutes of zero gravity.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif000n3b6p6r6a34d4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She told CNN she hoped to be able to return to her seat without issue, though Koenigsmann is prepared to lend a hand.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ns-37-crew-arrival.jpg\" alt=\"The crew of Blue Origin's NS-37 flight includes former hedge fund partner Joey Hyde, former SpaceX executive Hans Koenigsmann, European Space Agency engineer Michaela Benthaus, entrepreneur Adonis Pouroulis, business executive Neal Milch, and local space enthusiast Jason Stansell.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif000p3b6pm9nz0kix@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Koenigsmann will also help Benthaus in the event of an emergency that requires a speedy exit from the spacecraft.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif000q3b6py0sqws1f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBlue Origin is super well prepared,\u201d Benthaus said, noting that she and Koenigsmann previously traveled to the company\u2019s Texas facilities twice to hash out specific accommodations for this flight.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif000r3b6ppdgs9u3r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Advocates have long pointed out that space travel can be an ideal adventure for people with disabilities, as weightlessness can offer the chance to move about unbridled by gravity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif000s3b6p5xk221wh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While no one with a mobility-limiting disability has yet traveled to space, there have been several notable strides forward in recent years.  In 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/02\/22\/tech\/spacex-civilian-astronaut-st-judes-inspiration-4-scn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hayley Arceneaux<\/a>, a cancer survivor who has a titanium prosthesis in her leg, spent three days in orbit as part of an experimental civilian space mission. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/28\/sport\/john-mcfall-astronaut-paralympics-intl-spt\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John McFall<\/a>, a Paralympian with a prosthetic leg who works for the European Space Agency, this year became the first person with a physical disability ever to be medically cleared to fly to the International Space Station. (McFall has not yet flown to space.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif000t3b6pguwe98x8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Benthaus worried that her condition \u2014 a spinal cord injury from a 2018 mountain bike accident \u2014 might preclude her from achieving the same milestones.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif000u3b6p9omh6w6r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cMaybe space is for people who have an amputated leg but still can walk a little bit,\u201d Benthaus said she had wondered. \u201cMaybe having a spinal cord injury is way too disabled.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif000v3b6pgcl78ohj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When she reaches space, her accomplishment may quash similar doubts from others who have longed to experience spaceflight but are confined to a wheelchair.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif000w3b6pkdzgxuye@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, Benthaus said, she recognizes it may be years before trips to space are a regular occurrence for people like her.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif000x3b6pt18gwcoe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIn my case, Blue Origin is adapting the whole procedures,\u201d Benthaus said, acknowledging that such accommodations are not always possible.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif000y3b6pzncv5twi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think for a person with a spinal cord injury, we need to open our minds more and be willing to change existing systems,\u201d she said of what would be needed to allow more people with disabilities to reach Earth orbit and beyond.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif000z3b6p27snugeo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Of course, Benthaus added, there are financial issues as well. Most people do not have the means to purchase a seat on any of the currently available commercial space tourism vehicles. Blue Origin does not disclose its ticket prices, but based on what its competitor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/science\/live-news\/blue-origin-space-flight-katy-perry-04-14-25#cm9h3x52a00293b6ouvklicnt\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Galactic charges<\/a>, the experience likely costs several hundred thousand dollars.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif00103b6pc44xpq5i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI got lucky that I met Hans (Koenigsmann),\u201d Benthaus said, adding that he and Blue Origin are supporting the mission.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif00113b6pg4e98odv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Koenigsmann is something of a legend at SpaceX. As one of its earliest employees, he developed the avionics for the company\u2019s first rocket, the Falcon 1, in the early 2000s.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif00123b6pgtftocea@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He later became SpaceX\u2019s head of build and flight reliability and often served as the face of the company, appearing on its behalf at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7BTfjnoj29A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">news conferences<\/a> as SpaceX evolved into a globally dominant force in the commercial space industry.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif00133b6p5w1ov411@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But in 2021, Koenigsmann walked away from SpaceX. Walter Isaacson wrote in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/Elon-Musk\/Walter-Isaacson\/9781982181284\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">biography<\/a> of Elon Musk that the volatile SpaceX CEO disliked a report that Koenigsmann wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/12\/10\/tech\/spacex-starship-sn8-test-flight-recap-scn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an ill-fated test flight<\/a> of one of the company\u2019s rocket prototypes in 2020.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif00143b6php0opnfb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The test flight, called SN8, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/06\/15\/business\/spacex-orbital-test-scn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ran afoul<\/a> of federal regulators because the company moved forward with the launch without obtaining weather clearance from the Federal Aviation Administration. And in his report about the incident, Koenigsmann wanted SpaceX to take accountability, he told Issacson.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/elon-musk-and-hans-koenigsmann-at-the-spacex-crs-8-post-launch-press-conference-25713272733.jpg\" alt=\"Elon Musk and Hans Koenigsmann embrace during a post-flight news conference following the successful launch of SpaceX's CRS-8 mission to resupply the International Space Station in 2016.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif00163b6psbcv9zaz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBut my interpretation did not agree with Elon\u2019s interpretation,\u201d Koenigsmann told CNN. \u201cWe were both stubborn.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjbjpywi00013b6p94ryrpjg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the matter.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif00173b6poj7t71bo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After the ordeal, Musk had asked Koenigsmann to retire, and Koeningsmann ultimately ended his nearly 20-year tenure at the company in 2021.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif00183b6pbl2kg3u5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI still love SpaceX,\u201d Koenigsmann said. \u201cI still think (Musk) helped me a lot in my career, and did a lot of things for me.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif00193b6ptso3fo2u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Koenigsmann said he recognizes the optics are somewhat strange, with a former executive of SpaceX opting to travel to space for the first time with the company\u2019s biggest competitor.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif001a3b6p5nwzaykz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But he told CNN he views this mission as one that lives outside the bounds of competition.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif001b3b6pn5k9ey8l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think the competition is good in general. There should be competition,\u201d Koenigsmann said. \u201cIt shouldn\u2019t always be as personal as it sometimes is.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif001c3b6pn7ii49vr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For her part, Benthaus said she\u2019s thrilled to make this symbolic foray into space for wheelchair users.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif001d3b6pspvld9fu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She has also enjoyed a mostly positive reception to the news of her spaceflight. People with and without disabilities have reached out to praise her.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ns37-training-michi-benthaus.jpg\" alt=\"Michaela Benthaus is pictured inside a New Shepard capsule during training.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif001e3b6pbhmim0ra@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A few, however, have been antagonistic, questioning why space companies should work to accommodate people with disabilities.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif001f3b6pgk8iois9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To those detractors, Benthaus has two things to say.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjavbjif001g3b6pfq9kbzem@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            First, \u201cwe\u2019re thinking more and more about long-duration space missions; some of us want to go to the Mars in the future,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s a very long journey. And \u2014 yes \u2014 people can get a disability on the way.
