{"id":201361,"date":"2025-12-20T04:47:17","date_gmt":"2025-12-20T04:47:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/201361\/"},"modified":"2025-12-20T04:47:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-20T04:47:17","slug":"one-in-five-doctors-registered-in-ireland-opting-to-work-abroad-or-not-at-all-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/201361\/","title":{"rendered":"One in five doctors registered in Ireland opting to work abroad or not at all \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">One in five doctors on the Irish register were working abroad or not practising last year, according to new data from the regulator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A report from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-medical-council\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-medical-council\/\">Medical Council<\/a>, published on Friday, showed that in 2024, 26,591 doctors retained their place on its register. Of those, 21 per cent (5,628) were either practising medicine abroad only (4,160) or not actively practising medicine (1,468).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Of those who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2024\/02\/07\/facts-dont-support-narrative-of-irish-doctors-collectively-emigrating-to-australia-says-minister\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2024\/02\/07\/facts-dont-support-narrative-of-irish-doctors-collectively-emigrating-to-australia-says-minister\/\">worked abroad<\/a>, the mean age was 43.7 years, with a slight majority being between 35 and 44 (28.5 per cent). Just over two-thirds were men (67.8 per cent).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Just under one in five of that cohort had an Irish qualification, while 23 per cent qualified in the European Union or UK and 58 per cent had international qualifications from outside of Ireland, the EU and UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The majority of Irish graduates were working in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/australia\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/australia\/\">Australia<\/a> at 30 per cent or the UK at 24 per cent, while the majority of graduates from the EU and UK were working in the UK. The majority of international graduates were working in Pakistan (26 per cent) or the UK (18 per cent). <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/abroad\/2025\/12\/16\/letters-home-i-could-barely-afford-groceries-in-ireland-never-mind-a-mortgage\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Letters Homes: An Irish nurse in Melbourne Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">For those doctors who were not clinically active, the average age was 45 and almost two-thirds were women. Most were general medicine clinicians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Almost half of these doctors obtained their qualification in Ireland, and from those who had an international qualification, the majority obtained their primary medical degree in Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dr Maria O\u2019Kane, chief executive of the Medical Council, said the report highlighted \u201cpriority areas for supporting and retaining doctors in Ireland\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cA shortage of doctors impacts not only on patient safety, but the wellbeing of doctors in their day-to-day work.
