{"id":203392,"date":"2025-12-21T10:47:10","date_gmt":"2025-12-21T10:47:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/203392\/"},"modified":"2025-12-21T10:47:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-21T10:47:10","slug":"longford-farming-icsa-say-processors-must-halt-livestock-imports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/203392\/","title":{"rendered":"Longford farming: ICSA say processors must halt livestock imports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longfordleader.ie\/search?q=ICSA&amp;idcanale=12&amp;idcanalericerca=12&amp;sortElement=data_pubblicazione,true&amp;page=1&amp;sortDefault=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">ICSA<\/a> president Sean McNamara has said meat processors should immediately stop importing livestock from Northern Ireland in light of the increasingly precarious Bluetongue situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cICSA has serious concerns about the continued movement of animals across the border, particularly now that positive Bluetongue cases have been confirmed in the North and further cases are under investigation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Continuing Mr McNamara said, \u201cMidges spread Bluetongue. So, if a processor brings in sheep from the North that are carrying the virus, all it takes is for one midge around Athleague, Camolin, Navan, or wherever a factory is located, to land on an infected sheep.<\/p>\n<p>That midge then becomes infected too, and once that happens it can spread the virus to farms in the surrounding area. That is how quickly this disease can move.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHundreds of thousands of lambs are imported from the North every year purely as a tactic to keep a lid on prices here.<\/p>\n<p>But in a situation like this, processors cannot keep operating as if nothing has changed.
