{"id":204291,"date":"2025-12-22T00:10:18","date_gmt":"2025-12-22T00:10:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/204291\/"},"modified":"2025-12-22T00:10:18","modified_gmt":"2025-12-22T00:10:18","slug":"the-young-wildlife-photographer-who-could-be-the-next-attenborough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/204291\/","title":{"rendered":"The young wildlife photographer who could be the next Attenborough"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">If you want a safe bet for who will be Generation Alpha\u2019s answer to Sir David Attenborough, look no further than a ten-year-old girl from Wales whose wildlife photography is already hoovering up awards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Jamie Smart, from mid-Wales, has won two categories in the RSPCA Young Photographer Awards, finished runner-up in three categories and was commended in four. Earlier this year she won the ten-and-under category at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition for an image of a spider in a web covered in droplets of dew.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cI started photography when I was about six and a half but my passion for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/environment\/wildlife-nature?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=AWEtsqfhpjc_zyNy8b1WYKDf1__iOp4qnwkbUMh0thyxp8NcwX1THTQ26tyKxeNwp8E%3D&amp;gaa_ts=69482f03&amp;gaa_sig=LPFbAQcHM1wrmO0rit8IjsB2Ic3fzQXZbna9-oRMIDHxTEtFrtoqsWj05uZWXgMHVE7n4hwE09Yg9_swbltlYA%3D%3D\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wildlife<\/a> started with dinosaurs when I was about two,\u201d she said. \u201cMy dad asked if I\u2019d like to use a camera because I was finding it hard to use binoculars. It was her dad\u2019s Nikon D500 digital SLR camera that had been sitting on a shelf in the garage. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to drop it as I did know how expensive it was,\u201d said Jamie, who is known as Eagle Eyed Girl on social media. \u201cDad said it would take a while for me to learn how to capture birds in flight but it just took a couple of days,\u201d she said. \u201cI got a picture of a peregrine falcon, the fastest bird in the world, flying over our house. I\u2019m a wildlife nerd so I could identify it even in semi silhouette.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Her true love is for bugs. An image of a water boatman won her the prize in the \u201csmall world\u201d category at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/photography-uk\/article\/rspca-young-photographer-awards-2025-winners-england-wales-b9b38qc77?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=AWEtsqczyByeM2PnAQuNPEVY4Jee3iTS9di51bUCUWXgOoVifVcg9MTIITItDwyZMdc%3D&amp;gaa_ts=69482ea0&amp;gaa_sig=gVfXXFFRgsGa-uFV5BbTJ5P5Z4de-bSBq5RS8QZ5AEGfouVFjd3iO2zR25ARYZjUeqHp3RkL1hVyLacbcE4Bog%3D%3D\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RSPCA awards<\/a> and she was commended in the same category for an image of a trapdoor spider lurking in a tunnel waiting for its prey. \u201cBugs are incredible,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re so colourful and their behaviours are just extraordinary. Jamie said she soon \u201ceducated him\u201d, however, and the family visited Australia where she took photos of the newly identified Jade huntsman spider. \u201cWe were out every night looking for bugs, spiders and snakes,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019d love to see a giraffe weevil out in the wild. I do love my weevils.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The overall winner of the RSPCA competition was Thomas Durrant, 17, for an image of a stag silhouetted in the dark, its breath visible with a red glow. She was also runner-up in the pet portraits category for a quizzical photo of Pip the guinea pig and commended in the same category for a close-up of a grinning tortoise called Lenny. She was runner-up in the better world for animals category with a photo of a rescued chick in a knitted nest and commended for a close-up of a bee peering out of its own nest. She was also runner up in the under-12 category for a picture of embracing baboons at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A small, light brown bat lies in the palm of a person's hand.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/\/bf07bb4e-060c-44ff-9d06-a3af554bc376.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaped crusaders\u201d won the documenting animals category<\/p>\n<p>JAMIE SMART<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Jamie is homeschooled by her parents and said her friends were \u201camazed\u201d at her adventures, including an invitation to go to Kenya where she was enchanted by the big cats, particularly a serval, but was particularly thrilled by seeing a praying mantis and dung beetles in the wild.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">An articulate, engaging and passionate speaker with a wry sense of humour, it is easy to imagine Jamie coming out from behind the lens and featuring in front of it when she is older. Could she be the next Attenborough? Does she have other heroes? \u201cA little bit of Bertie Gregory and Steve Backshall and Steve Irwin and Robert Irwin,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"last-paragraph\" class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Her mother, Eleri, 48, said: \u201cHer passion has just flourished. We are guided by Jamie\u2019s passion.
