Cork City Council is asking members of the public to help choose names for the two newest bridges in Cork city.<\/p>\n
A bridge connecting Wandesford Quay via Lambley\u2019s Lane to South Main St recently opened.<\/p>\n
And a bridge and pathway connecting Proby\u2019s Quay to South Main St through the former Beamish and Crawford brewery site is expected to be open by next spring.<\/p>\n
The bridges will provide improved pedestrian and cycle connectivity and are funded by the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund and by the National Transport Authority.<\/p>\n
Similar to the process that named both the Mary Elmes Bridge, in 2019, and Vernon Mount Bridge, in 2023, Cork City Council is now asking the public to put forward suggestions for the names of these two new bridges.<\/p>\n
Names that honour, celebrate, or remember a person, group, or events of significance that have helped to shape the city will be considered. Former lord mayor and Independent councillor, Kieran McCarthy, told The Echo: \u201cIt\u2019s great to see the open call to name the city\u2019s two newest bridges.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe city centre now has 36 bridges, which date from different eras, and names that link to those eras and tell a story about the city\u2019s development at a point in time.<\/p>\n
\u201cI felt that the recent naming calls for recent projects worked to collect names for consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n
Submissions will be accepted until Monday, January 26 of next year at 4pm.<\/p>\n
After this date, the suggestions will be shortlisted and brought to a council meeting, where the members will vote on the names.<\/p>\n
The public can make their suggestions online by using Cork City Council\u2019s consultation portal at consult.corkcity.ie.<\/p>\n
