And, like most 20-year-olds on Earth, MRO&#8217;s camera roll is absolutely packed.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/missions\/mars-reconnaissance-orbiter\/one-of-nasas-key-cameras-orbiting-mars-takes-100000th-image\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/missions\/mars-reconnaissance-orbiter\/one-of-nasas-key-cameras-orbiting-mars-takes-100000th-image\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">According to NASA<\/a>, MRO has just taken its 100,000th photo of the Martian surface using its HiRISE camera. Put another way, that&#8217;s an average of 5,000 photos a year, 417 photos a month, or about 14 a day every day since March 2006.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"db615cee-92f2-4ffb-bf66-baa04d5e27fb-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The new milestone image, snapped on Oct. 7, shows a shadowy wasteland of mesas, craters and dunes known as Syrtis Major. This region is just southeast of Jezero Crater, the ancient lakebed where NASA&#8217;s Perseverance rover is <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/mars\/incredibly-exciting-nasa-claims-its-found-the-clearest-sign-yet-of-past-life-on-mars\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/mars\/incredibly-exciting-nasa-claims-its-found-the-clearest-sign-yet-of-past-life-on-mars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hunting for evidence of life<\/a>, and appears as an enormous dark spot <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/photojournal\/a-closer-hubble-encounter-with-mars-syrtis-major\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/photojournal\/a-closer-hubble-encounter-with-mars-syrtis-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">when seen from afar<\/a> by space telescopes like Hubble.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">MRO has observed the region many times before, and has previously <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kiss.caltech.edu\/papers\/surface\/papers\/Bridges-Nature-2012.pdf\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.kiss.caltech.edu\/papers\/surface\/papers\/Bridges-Nature-2012.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">turned up evidence<\/a> that the sand dunes there are slowly migrating across the planet&#8217;s surface.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;HiRISE hasn&#8217;t just discovered how different the Martian surface is from Earth, it&#8217;s also shown us how that surface changes over time,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.jpl.nasa.gov\/people\/tamppari\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.jpl.nasa.gov\/people\/tamppari\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Leslie Tamppari<\/a> MRO&#8217;s deputy project scientist at NASA&#8217;s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/missions\/mars-reconnaissance-orbiter\/one-of-nasas-key-cameras-orbiting-mars-takes-100000th-image\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/missions\/mars-reconnaissance-orbiter\/one-of-nasas-key-cameras-orbiting-mars-takes-100000th-image\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a>. &#8220;We&#8217;ve seen dune fields marching along with the wind and avalanches careening down steep slopes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:75.00%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/tA3FHMgHDiZvKMBxmjMy6T.webp.webp\" alt=\"The full view of Syrtis Major\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/tA3FHMgHDiZvKMBxmjMy6T.webp.webp\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/tA3FHMgHDiZvKMBxmjMy6T.webp.webp\" class=\"inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>The full view of Syrtis Major (Image credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech\/University of Arizona)<\/p>\n<p id=\"9dcda74c-bbc4-44ad-93ac-718e9e18932e\">Studying how the Red Planet changes over time will help demystify the forces that govern it, and help reveal whether it was ever <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/mars\/strangely-bleached-rocks-on-mars-hint-that-the-red-planet-was-once-a-tropical-oasis\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/mars\/strangely-bleached-rocks-on-mars-hint-that-the-red-planet-was-once-a-tropical-oasis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a lush waterworld<\/a> like Earth. Launched from Florida on Aug. 12, 2005, and inserted into Mars orbit on March 10, 2006, the MRO will continue its mission to photograph the planet as long as it&#8217;s able.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8ea2bfb0-f6f3-4fd7-bb8b-aee1dce73503\">Occasionally, MRO does take a break from its primary mission to gaze off into space.
