These balloons can loft instruments to roughly 120,000 feet (about 36.6 kilometers) \u2014 high in the stratosphere, above most of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a>\u2014at a fraction of the cost and complexity of a space mission, while still enabling serious astrophysics, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/8483-nasa-takes-sun.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/8483-nasa-takes-sun.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heliophysics,<\/a> <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-earth-science-importance-earth-day-2020-op-ed.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-earth-science-importance-earth-day-2020-op-ed.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth science<\/a>, and technology testing.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/moon-base-antarctica-international-cooperation\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/moon-base-antarctica-international-cooperation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Antarctica<\/a> is one of the best places on Earth to fly these missions. Scientists have never clearly seen antideuterons or antihelium in cosmic rays before. If GAPS detects even a single antideuteron, it could give us important clues about the mysterious substance known as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20930-dark-matter.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20930-dark-matter.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dark matter,<\/a> which makes up most of the universe but is invisible to us.
