One of Ireland’s<\/a> most common bugs could be in the rise over the next few weeks with colder, winter weather approaching.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Norovirus, or the winter vomiting bug, causes vomiting and diarrhoea.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite its name, the winter vomiting bug can be caught at any time of the year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It is quite an unpleasant illness but generally only lasts a few days.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Symptoms include feeling or getting sick, having diarrhoea, a small fever, headaches, stomach cramps, and aching limbs, according to the HSE.<\/p>\n

These will usually last for two or three days, during which time it is fine to look after yourself or your child at home.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It is advised to avoid going to the GP as the virus is easily spread.<\/p>\n

There is no cure for the illness and unless there is a risk of a more serious problem, you do not need medical advise.<\/p>\n

It’s important not to become dehydrated if you have a chronic medical condition such as diabetes.<\/p>\n

Norovirus spreads very easily especially in public places such as hospitals, nursing homes and schools.<\/p>\n

You can catch it if small particles of vomit or poo from an infected person get into your mouth.<\/p>\n

This can happen through close contact with someone with norovirus,\u00a0touching contaminated surfaces or objects, or eating contaminated food.<\/p>\n

You are most infectious from when your symptoms start until 48 hours after all your symptoms have disappeared.<\/p>\n

To avoid getting or spreading norovirus, remember to regularly wash your hands, disinfect surfaces, wash clothes and bedding, and do not share towels.<\/p>\n
